Album Review

If a mad-scientist of experimental music combined the styles of folk, ambient, and rock in a test tube, you might end up with the album Beat Romantic. The folk-tronic instrumental duo Talkdemonic weaves together a lot of sounds on this disc that have been arranged together quite seamlessly in the past, despite their disparate backgrounds. The band adds moments of purposeful disjointedness to this mix, with the apparent goal of creating small amounts of tension, much like post-Mr. Bungle outfit Secret Chiefs 3, who have an altogether similar, though much more frenetic sound."White Gymnasium" illustrates this well: a snare-heavy rock & roll rhythm section is virtually the only constant in the song. Sounds of flute, concertina, and harmonium all take over the melody at various points — a melody that has something of a refrain but certainly no arc — blurring the lines between pop and ambient, usually with enjoyable results. "Woody Shelves/Dusty Florescent" has a refrain that's performed entirely by a basic drum kit — an innovative idea that's only flaw is that the line is very distinctly alt-rock. It can leave the listener in a conventional rock headspace, expecting a vocal track or even just a pointed melody that isn't there. This speaks to both the overall strengths and weaknesses of Beat Romantic; the various artistic styles on the disc rely on different sensibilities, creating moments when that disruptive style serves mostly to make things clash or fall flat. The effect, however is quite intentional, because this album was not made to lure in the lovers of each influence it draws upon; it's a straight-ahead experimental album for fans of the genre. Listeners who lack regard for the conventions of pop, rock, folk, and ambient as conventions in and of themselves will be very pleased with this record. Others will probably require the patience to sit through multiple listens before they're able to leave their expectations at the door.

Beat Romantic is a Sonic Experience

by Soulphile

I first heard Talkdemonic at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach, CA. They more or less stole the show from The Helio Sequence, another Oregon-based act. Though Helio was entertaining, Talkdemonic was captivating and engaging--the entire audience seemed mesmerized through the first three songs of the performance. But this is not a review of the live show...

This album can satisfy a range of attention needs from the listener. It plays well as mood music listened to softly in the background of a cocktail party. Yet it can also provide a sonic adventure with a pair of high-quality headphones and a dimly lit room.

The tracks fit well into Playlists that include a variety of music, from alt-rock, to folk and pop--a potentially perfect bit of spice to add to the typical "coffee shop" style mix.

Standout tracks include: DustyFlourescent/Wooden Shelves, Cascade Locks, Bering, Manhatten '81, and Hillside Monarch. While Junesong has a decidedly "Postal Service" feel, it is the exception on this record. The rest of the album is uniquely Talkdemonic—a testament to the band’s artistry.

Kevin O'Connor's persistent, emphatic drumming is in greater sonic focus than on Mutinysunshine. Somehow, he is capable of banging the hell out of his kit while still weaving emotionally evocative lines throughout. Truly an experience. I especially appreciate the way Lisa Molinaro references her melancholy viola riffs from previous songs. When listening to the record as a whole, unified piece, one can certainly pick up a slight jazz influence, suggestions and hints of pattern but rarely strict repetition from song to song.

I highly recommend the album. After a few listening sessions, you'll likely want to buy Mutinysunshine as well. Oh, and try to see them live if at all possible. It makes for a fantastic show.

Stunning.

There is nothing "experimental" about Talkdemonic. "Experimental" is a genre reserved for artists like Matmos, whose music pushes the boundaries of actual music -- whereas Talkdemonic just pushes the boundaries of genre. The successful union of folk, rock, electronica, and orchestral elements is a mark of innovative and skillful production, not experimentation.

Anyway, if this album is an "experiment," it worked.
