iTunes Review

Michigan’s Anathallo came onto the scene with a number of EPs and a revolving door of musicians and instruments faintly evoking the emo side of the indie-pop spectrum. This, their full-length debut, turns the volume down a notch while turning up the artistic inspiration. A quieter, more introspective affair (based on a Japanese folk tale, Hanasakajijii), you won’t find raging guitars or screamo vocals as found on Luminous Luminescence..., but you will find twinkling glockenspiels, glassy acoustic guitar plucking, swelling, ambient synths, and somber pianos. To be fair, you’ll also find gleaming trombones, handclapping and lovely vocal layering, woven into uplifting, multipart harmonies. Floating World has real ambition, and if boldly beautiful music, borne of subtlety, introspection, and spiritual expression are what you’re after, give it a try. Tracks like the delicate “Genessaret” and the sweet “Dokkoise House” are unlike anything you’ll hear from other indie bands (love the playful choral parts at the end of “Dokkoise House!”) ... and though the occasional track, such as “Cuckoo Spitting Blood” raises the “freak folk” flag, this collection deserves its own original banner.

A Masterpiece

This album takes a while to digest. I had Floating World in my iTunes library for a year before understanding how beautiful it is. It is very challenging, and not one you'll want to ask the DJ to play at your friend's wedding. However, if you want to be astounded by ingenious compositions, chord progressions and instrumentation, this is the album for you.

Those who hate it never gave it a chance.

I bought this album because I had bought Canopy Glow before this and loved it, so I thought I'd like to hear the old Anathallo. I listen to a couple of songs scattered around the album, and didn't quite enjoy it. So I set it down for a bit. Then I felt like listening to Anathallo once again, so I put on Floating World. Tip: Listen all the way through. If I had a dime for all the times I got chill bumps from this masterpiece, I'd be a millionare. Take Floating World in as a long symphony, it will give your money's worth, and 100 times more. Don't let the strange song titles fool you, this is the most amazing music I've ever heard.

#3. On my list of top 3 albums of this decade

Never in such a way have I appreciated music. My friends made me a CD with Anathallo on it. Ever since I first listened to them, I began to listen to music in a whole new way... The album it's self is incredible. The concept is brilliant, the music's movement changes with every track, and you hear echoes of certain themes. The musicians are amazing. Each one plays at least three different instuments, and sound incredible live (at least so I'm told, I want, no, I HAVE to see them live!!!) Buy the whole album. honestly you will not regret it at all.
