Album Review

Stephin Merritt of Magnetic Fields became a critical favorite in part because of his astonishing eclecticism. Future Bible Heroes, and certainly this five-song EP, seem to be an outlet for him to deeply indulge in one genre in particular, electronic dance rock. (The band is not just a front for Merritt, as Christopher Ewen adds the synth beats and Magnetic Fields' Claudia Gonson shares vocals with Merritt.) This is much more melodic and poppy than most dance fodder sharing similar beats; one is tempted to be arch and postulate that there's too much of a tune (and too much thought and irreverence behind the lyrics) for the taste of many beat-driven club goers. If you don't like dance rock and do like Merritt's other projects, this probably won't change your mind about the style as a whole, but you probably will like this much more than most dance rock. If you're a dance rock fan, here's some wit that you can hum along to, as in the exotica ode "My Blue Hawaii," or the blithe title track, which is like a subtly cheerier Ian Curtis. And it's nice to have a wispy female singer (Gonson) taking the lead vocals on some tracks, to contrast with the deep-toned male drone (Merritt's) that's found in so much dance rock.

Hopeless may be one of the greatest songs ever recorded!

A Masterpiece

This album is a great piece of work. From the clever album cover to the beautifully performed songs, this is 1 album you can't miss. First off, I would like to say that Merritt is quite an individual, and he is a very independent artist. I would just like to make it clear that I have the upmost repsect for him. Now, lets get to the review. The album starts off with the jazzy and somewhat "happy" sounding I'm lonely and i love it. Obviously its not a happy song, but it really shows the power that Merritt has to deal with life and desolation. It's a great song and it has alot of emotion. Next is a weaker track I think, called
my blue hawaii, which shows merritt's hopelessness in which he dreams of what bliss could be.You
can skip this if you want. The next song, Cafe Hong Kong, is the best song hands down. It is
amazing, its one of those songs that put you totally out of focus and make you day dream, no matter
how many times you hear it.Next is (its a)Good thing I don't have any feelings. Its ok, and shows the hopelessness again along with merrit's overall strength. It was short and nothing that great, so you can skip it too. And finally, Hopeless (the remix) ends the album perfectly, and shows the whole albums meaning all together.I would suggust buying the whole album, or if you want to save money, try out tracks 1, 3, and 5. Overall Merritt is my musical hero in his genre, Congrats this album was
heaven to the ears and heart.
