Album Review

Punk bands, of course, were not meant to last, and even if Romeo Void, with their dance beats and warm sax sound, as well as a distinctive lead singer with a gift for soundbite lyrics, seemed to have more commercial potential than most, their five-year, three-album existence was long enough to make some noise, make some compromises, and make it out alive. This 15-song, 65-minute compilation is notable not only for the signature songs — "White Sweater," "Myself to Myself," "A Girl in Trouble (Is a Temporary Thing)," and, especially, "Never Say Never" — but also for revealing the range of a band that seemed at the time mostly a backdrop for Debora Iyall. Romeo Void were a band, and from the evidence of this set, a good one, too.

Forgot how great this band is. All the songs are ear drum worthy. The vocals superior in range and technique, driving drum rhythmus, and soul moving guitar licks are out of this world. Love this band!

Right up their with The Cars and The Ramones. Redefined the use of Saxophone in modern music. And just plain cool that a Native American girl could be a punk rocker.

I missed out on Romeo Void when they were out in the early 80s, but discovered them maybe ten years ago. It's a shame this is the only album that's available right now. It's a wonderful collection, but not enough. I'm shocked that in this day and age of digital music that everything that's out of print doesn't become available again. The Romeo Void catalog is one that needs to see the light of day again.

Thanks to the reductive onslaught of the "'80s party weekend" radio format and the numbing similarity of most '80s hits compilations, hearing the name Romeo Void instantly conjures up the phrase "I might like you better if we slept together" in most minds. The unforgettable chorus of their best-known...
