iTunes Review

It would be hard to imagine an album more conducive to romance than Johnny Mathis’ Open Fire, Two Guitars. This 1959 release is exquisite in its simplicity, keeping a tight spotlight on Mathis’ winsome vocals while guitarists Tony Mattola and Al Caiola offer subtle accompaniment. The intimacy of the recording is a big part of its enduring appeal — unlike most of Mathis’ hits from this era, there are no florid arrangements obscuring his singing. The title tune (by Leiber and Stoller) sets the dreamy tone and leisurely pace for the rest of the album. Mathis’ readings of familiar numbers like “I’ll Be Seeing You,” ”My Funny Valentine” and “Embraceable You” brings them renewed luster. His way of lingering on a note and turning a phrase into a sensuous sigh recalls Billie Holiday at times — in fact, his rendition of “Tenderly” rivals Holiday’s in its subdued eroticism. Even a seemingly lightweight number like “Bye, Bye Blackbird” becomes an eloquent expression of longing in his hands. For capturing desire in song, Open Fire, Two Guitars approaches perfection.

Simple, unadorned, and brilliant

The title says it all: Johnny Mathis and 2 jazz electric guitars, occasionally with a little upright bass. That's it. But with a voice like Mathis', that's all you need.
Mathis takes these standards and makes them totally his own. His voice throughout this album is nothing short of amazing. His phrasing, vocal quality and range here, as well as his interperative abilities, is quite stunning. His voice has always been great, but this album is a revelation. Johnny's voice is front and center with only the slightest bit of reverb, and the beautiful and sypathetic backing of two jazz guitars, one in each channel, which makes this recording immediate and timeless. That album could have been made last week. You can almost hear the fire. And the song selection is supurb.
Re-recording standards seems to be all the rage nowadays, from Michael Buble to Rod Stewart. But they can't hold a candle to Johnny Mathis and this recording. Any serious vocal student will be studying this for years, and every serious music fan should own this.

I was a teenager when I bought this album and it quickly became my favorite. Great slow dancing tunes and Johnny is great with the two guitars. I can still close my eyes and be drawn back to 1959 and how
I slow danced the night away to this gem of a recording. This is his best album ever and I still get slow dancing urges when I play it. If you don't have it get it right away.

One of the last and most popular in a long line of traditional male vocalists who emerged before the rock-dominated 1960s, Johnny Mathis concentrated on romantic readings of jazz and pop standards for the ever-shrinking adult contemporary audience of the '60s and '70s.
