Album Review

Gospel singers are supposed to be vocally agile, and their performances are often technically impressive. But the best ones give you the impression that no matter how baroque and elaborate the performance, it's all being done in the service of God, not as a way of bringing glory to the singer. One of the big differences between gospel music and Christian pop music is that in Christian pop music there seems to be more of a tendency for the artist to draw attention to his or her own sensitivity and righteousness by means of bloated or ill-conceived arrangements and a highly mannered, stylized delivery. Case in point: Bart Millard, a man who is as sincerely devout and musically gifted as they come, but who is also just a bit — a good bit, actually — too in love with his own voice. This album is meant to be a celebration of traditional hymns, but instead it comes across as a celebration of Bart Millard (an impression clinched by the DVD side of this release's DualDisc version, which features a documentary about Millard's hometown and childhood). The arrangements are all self-consciously idiosyncratic — some in ways that work very nicely, such as the acoustic folk-rock setting of "Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior," and some in ways that don't, such as an inappropriately strutting New Orleans arrangement of "Just a Closer Walk with Thee." Millard's spare and lovely rendition of "Have a Little Talk with Jesus" is a treat, but his Memphis soul take on "Softly and Tenderly" is a disaster, and ruins one of the most powerful revival hymns ever written. Millard has lots of fans, and most will probably enjoy this album very much. But those from outside that group will likely be taken aback by many of the musical choices he makes here.

What was i-tunes listening too???

What a breath of fresh air, I grow wearisome of these old hymns being done over and over the same way, love the Harry Connick Jr feel mixed with Blue Grass/Country. I think the i-tunes review was way off base, glad I was able to play a clip before I bought the album.

After reading the main review of this album, I would like to share a very simplistic concept with the author of said review and anyone else whom may agree with this author.
For anyone to say that any Christian artist try’s to call attention to their gifts by arranging tunes that highlight their ability, (an ability given to them by God himself) is missing the point.
Does not God give each of us a special and unique gift? To try and conform to another's vision would be wrong. To sing with the very ability that has been given to you and to follow ones heart and the spirit of the Lord whom leads us all is more in line with what we should all be doing. Whatever your gift, be it music, art, public speaking, helping others, carpentry, you name it, I would say to you, use your gift for the glory of the Lord Jesus, the way in which he leads you to do so. NEVER conform to another’s ideology or outdated beliefs. The bible says, people parish from the lack of knowledge. I will honestly tell you, I can not and was not reached by contemporary means and the likes of the arrogant opera style singing that went on in my church. It made my ears bleed and think that anyone who followed Christ was a softened up sissified idiot. Just because something doesn’t speak to you does not mean it doesn’t speak to another. If you don’t like something, the beauty is that no one will force you to listen to or look at it.

In closing I would say to those of you who think they must attempt to criticize another mans work done from following the vision within his heart put there from our Lord, JUST STOP IT ! ! ! Say something positive or say nothing at all. If it’s not for you then just keep your mouth shut. Jesus once said, "do unto others as you would have others do unto you” pretty simplistic rule of thumb that if the entire world could learn to do would be truly amazing. Then we wouldn’t have to read reviews written by self-serving authors who couldn’t make it in another mans calling but sees the need to try and tear such men down. GET A LIFE.
ROCK ON BART with what ever style the Lord leads you to sing in. & to God be the glory forever and ever!! !
