Album Review
John Williams skillfully utilizes the formidable talents of renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma and equally beloved violinist Itzhak Perlman to flesh out director Rob Marshall's celluloid rendering of the bestselling novel by Arthur Golden, Memoirs of a Geisha. Elegant and predictable, Williams sticks to the source, building grand Western themes off of traditional Japanese melodies with a heady mix of regional instrumentation (shakuhachi and koto) and cinematic know-how. This is the composer at his most refined and nuanced, providing a textbook example of professional composition that revels in its subject matter without ever intruding.

Proving once again that John Williams is the composer of the Age.
by WaxonWaxovAs the end credits were playing when I first saw this movie I said out loud "Who wrote this music!?" Just then the credits said "Music Composed and Conducted by John Williams" to which I said "of course." This movie was made at a time in Williams' career where the could have just been phoning it in, but here certainly didn't here. ALL of the music in this soundtrack is great. It's especially good for when you need to pipe muic into your head to shut-out the world while studying, working, etc. A part of what makes this such a great soundtrack is the fact that the violin solos are played by Itzak Perlman and the Cello solos are played by Yo Yo Ma. Williams SHOULD have won an Oscar for this piece. He was robbed.
Astonishingly Beautiful Music
by DubbyWastingTapeThe movie was somewhat disappointing because I read the book 3 times and my expectaions were high, but this soundtrack makes up for any book to screenplay shortcomings. The track names evoke my own memory of the book, so this is like music to accompany a personal interpretation. The story is so good that I still think of the characters and story as non-fiction. This is beautiful music for a sunny day, rainy afternoon, or a moody night.
Extraordinary!! Must-Own for Williams Fans!
by *film4life*Memoirs of a Geisha is not only one of the most beautifully and intricately crafted films, but John William's work on this movie is astounding. It thoroughly demonstrates his diversity of musical style, while at the same time managing to hold on to his signature sound as a composer. The thematic material (such as Tracks 1, 8, 18...) is excellent, as expected for JW fans, as well as his more transitory or atmospheric approaches (like the Rooftops of the Hanamachi, or Dr. Crab's Prize). Overall, it is an essential buy for anyone that appreciates great film-scoring, and/or the works of John Williams. Highly Recommended!!!
