Album Review
The early 21st century certainly wasn't as fertile a period for ambient music as, say, the '80s were. But there are a few exceptions, such as Toronto by way of New York composer/producer/guitarist, Michael Brook. Although not as dedicated to the ambient genre as say, Brian Eno once was, Brook's 2006 release, RockPaperScissors, manages to combine elements of the aforementioned genre with more traditional pop. Schooled by the likes of Daniel Lanois (Brook once worked as an engineer at Lanois' studio) and none other than Eno himself — both appeared on Brook's 1985 debut, Hybrid — RockPaperScissors shows that Brook obviously picked up a thing or two stylistically from his mentors. Included is a guest vocal by Lisa Germano on the airy "Want," as well as a posthumous contribution by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan on the track "Pond" (Brook utilized some outtake vocals from the late Pakistani singer — Brook produced Khan's 1994 release, The Last Prophet). Teetering between ambient and new age at times, RockPaperScissors sounds like the perfect background soundtrack for an art gallery opening.

Innovative, but not Brook at his best
by sbaudiophileRockPaperScissors has a cinematic quality that has become trademark for the Infinite-Guitar-strumming Michael Brook, who has been producing ambient and experimental soundscapes since his debut album Hybrid (1985). Brook, who, in addition to excellent releases such as the now classic Cobalt Blue (1992) and Shona (1995), has also composed several film scores. With an eclecticism reminiscent of Harold Budd's She Is Phantom (1994), RockPaperScissors is a blend of Brook's recent innovation with Middle-Eastern music (Tracks 1, 4 and 8 stand out) and more forgettable, overwrought vocal tracks (the rest of the album). Overall, Brook's work from the early nineties shines as his best though RockPaperScissors has a few pleasant surprises.
RockPaperScissors
by jazwomanI awoke this morning to this album being played (and reviewed) on NPR. I was so enchanted I immediately got up and ordered it on ITunes. My women's circle (of 18 years) was at my home for the day working on collaborative art journals - we listened to it over and over and commented repeatedly on what perfect music this is as a backdrop to expressing one's creativity. After listening to it throughout the day, I have to say - I'm still not tired of it - *and* everyone in my women's circle went home to buy it, too.
I love this album.
A Real Gem
by musigirrlTalk about an original sense of music. Michael Brook has some of the best taste in sound that I have ever heard. A friend dragged a hungover me along to his show a couple weeks ago and I couldn't have spent a nicer or more interesting evening. Love that he had two violinists in the band. This album is truly devine. Nusrat, Richard Burton, the Lebanese violinist guy ---- it's all so perfect. And the song with Lisa Germano (also in the live show) is amazingly haunting and heartbreaking in all the best ways. I highly reccommend this album and definitely go to any live shows if you can.
