iTunes Review

The best albums are worlds unto themselves, demanding to be absorbed start to finish in one listen. This beguiling effort from Olu Dara takes the listener on a journey to the center of American music, from the blues to funk and jazz. Dara, who cut his teeth on the free-jazz scene as a trumpeter in the '70s and '80s, wrote the songs, sings most of 'em, and plays guitar and cornet on this sexy, globe-trotting album. Too often projects like this get over-produced, but the album is rough-edged and has a mellow pace. It exudes a subdued joy that's totally infectious.

I borrowed this album off my girlfriend's brother, and have been listening to it ever since.. a really uplifiting happy sound, uses a lot of great African rhythms, married with southern US blues - very special.

If you want to hear true talent...Olu Dara's sound is so primal and untampered with that it sound new and more evolved with each repeated listening. I have had the album since 1998 and have yet to tire of it.

Oh Yeah, his son is the rapper NAS--talent runs in the family, i guess.

Although he didn't record under his own name until 1998, Olu Dara enjoyed a reputation as one of the jazz avant-garde's leading trumpeters from the mid-'70s on.
