iTunes Review

A veteran producer from San Francisco, Dan the Automator is most identified with his ambitious concept albums, manning the boards for bizarre-yet-funky projects from Dr. Octagon, Deltron 3030, Gorillaz, and Handsome Boy Modeling School. Like his homie/contemporary Prince Paul, he's always down to inject more than a little humor into his music, but he also has real chops, a serious understanding of composition, and knows how to make a hit. On 2K7, he assembles a dozen tracks with about 20 rappers, all rhyming about their basketball (video game) skills. True, it's kind of limiting lyrically, and a few songs wallow in just about every sports cliche imaginable, but there are several standouts, most notably "2K007" with Ghostface and AG, "Anchor Man" with Chali 2Na, and Zion I's "Fade Away." Automator's beats are solid if a little dumbed down at times, and it's certainly not his most defining work, but if you're looking to get pumped up for a big game, you could do a lot worse.

Dan the Automator makes some unique beats for this classic of a game. Its not your typical "electronicized" hip-hop, going for a more old-skool flavor to fit the theme of basketball. You either you like it or you don't.

Its got some dope beats and great artists to back him up, from "Here Comes the Champ" with Mos Def and Anwar Superstar, which is an awesome song to get ready for the big game. "Ball Till You Fall" has a some nice verses from Fabolous and a really tight beat, and "Lyrics to Go" is eerily catchy.

Not the most outstanding album, but a few plays in your iPod will get you ready for a pick-up game.
