iTunes Review
Dream big, aim high, and unleash the beast within. That’s the philosophy behind Mastodon’s mutant form of prog-metallurgy, as evidenced on 2006’s Blood Mountain. Singer/guitarist Brent Hinds rages like a maddened prophet confronting every Angel of Hell imaginable, howling himself raw with defiance. “Crystal Skull,” “Colony of Birchmen,” “Hand of Stone” and similar tracks invoke gore-spattered Nordic tales of the supernatural, brought to seething life with shifting tempos and stabbing guitar strokes. Beneath the album’s volcanic surface, there is surprising nuance, revealed in the jazzy undercurrents of “Capillarian Crest” and the hyperkinetic grandeur of “Bladecatcher.” “Sleeping Giant” stretches forth like a majestic arctic sea, while “Circle of Cysquatch” throbs with the fury of a flagellation ritual. Mastodon fully struts its elephantine stuff on “Pendulous Skin,” a vast, multi-textured sojourn into the band’s inner universe. At times, Blood Mountain nearly sinks into aural murkiness and lyric obscurity. Admittedly, the album is a lot to digest — but for those seeking epochal metal with a dark twist, this sprawling work offers massive satisfaction.

Best Mastodon album!
by friday13kornThe Wolf is Loose: I'd recommend this track to any mastodon-loving thrash junkie who's looking for a thrill. 9/10
Crystal Skull: this song entirely shows the meaning of the band mastodon. it's basically a metal anthem for the extraterrestrials out there. 9/10
Sleeping Giant: one of the coolest songs and even moreso one of the coolest videos in prog-metal 8.5/10
Cappilarian Crest: awesome! i dont feel at all like a critic today. this isn't prog-metal, really. it's prog-superhard core. as usual, oddly amazing guitars and drum work. 8/10
Circle of Cysquatch: this song is weird! supernatural, if you would. a total tour of eerie guitars and unnecessarily powerful vocal town. 8.5/10
Bladecatcher: this song takes a few listens, but really comes out awesome and...well...awesome! 8.5/10
Colony of Birchmen: best music video on earth. we need more of those videos like that! not to mention great song and great to play on rock band ;) 8/10
Hunters of the Sky: bloodcurdling screams, loud drums and relentless bass are this song's fortes. 8/10
Hand of Stone: the entirity of metal oddities! crazy song and crazier drums, brann dailor is the savior of drums! 8.5/10
This Mortal Soil: seeing as mastodon is amazing, a funk-metal progtastic mammoth of mortal soil doesn't hurt a bit! 9/10
Siberian Divide: as for the title, what the hell? great song, but really weird. just adds to the greatness...8.5/10
Pendulous Skin: an offbeat, slowish masterpiece, again, by mastodon! 8.5/10
overall, best mastodon album, buy it.
