iTunes Review

“I’ve covered a lot in my 20 years,” Janet Jackson acknowledges at 20 Y.O.’s outset. Coyly, she adds: “And I’ve uncovered a lot.” Two decades after her triumph with Control, 20 Y.O. nods to the different phases of Jackson’s hitmaking career while subtly updating those styles. “Show Me” harks back to the poppy days of "Escapade" while near-shamelessly grafting on a spell-it-out chorus straight from Gwen Stefani’s “Hollaback Girl.” “Enjoy” treads similar ground; it’s less a summer jam than a late-spring one in which you can almost hear the morning dew on the leaves. Of course, there’s sex. “So Excited” is a PG-13 celebration featuring rapper Khia of “My Neck, My Back” fame. And much of the disc’s second half is midtempo or slower boudoir music, with “Love 2 Love” adding some old-school soul drama to the formula. Jackson’s groundbreaking energy is on hold, but 20 Y.O. is hardly tired.

The ONLY good song is "Enjoy".

Poor Janet. She has obviously given up her control to boyfriend/hip hop producer Jermaine Dupri and has let him steer her down the road of tired, obnoxious, mid-tempo hip-hop- beats that are too slow to dance to. The songs have no hooks. The lyrics and vocals are whispery and indecipherable. Dupri makes Janet come across as a copycat, dime-a-dozen, hip hop act who isn't worthy of her legacy. A new Janet album used to feel like an event- where you knew there would be a good 5 or 6 hit songs burning up the radio for the next year. This one is a dud. Only the song "Enjoy" captures any of the magic that made us all fall in love with Janet. And the first single, "So Excited"??- not even a shred of a melody or a hook can be found. Janet- please dump Jermaine Depri and find some inspiration, STAT!

DEFINATELY A MUST-HAVE

WOW. When I first heard this album I was hooked.

So Excited - my favorite up-tempo track on this album

Get It Out Me - decent track

This Body - GREAT track. I Love the robotic beat

With U - nice ballad, nice beat

Take Care - FAVORITE SONG. slow, melodic and romantic.

Love 2 Love - another great song (very reminiscent from the 'janet.' album)

Daybreak - I didn't like this song at first, but the beat grew on me

Terribly Disappointing

It's difficult to even review this album, since nearly all of the tracks run together. At its best, as on the Jam & Lewis assisted "Daybreak," 20 Y.O. is a mediocre tribute to Janet's past material; at its worst, as on nearly all of the Jermaine Dupri-produced tracks (i.e. "So Excited"), the album is practically unlistenable. Janet, who gives us the same tired, sexed-up lyrics ("This Body"), gets lost in bland hip-hop beats ("Show Me"); what result are tracks that sound like outtakes from any of her host of current imitators. Once, Janet challenged herself and her listeners with trailblazing concept albums; now, she simply settles for the sound du jour, proving only that many other artists can do it better. Why does Janet continue to muddy the waters of a formerly great career with these half-baked records?
