Great uber-acapella group. great CD.
by The_Banshee_of_BopI met Janie Scott in 1985 or so, before the Bobs hit - she was a friend of a co-worker, and I knew that Bobs stood for "Best of Breed," but I had never heard her band. I tried to get in to a Manhattan club to hear them but it was insanely crowded and the show was going to be late anyway. Then I forgot about the Bobs til I heard their song "Signs on the Line" (on this CD) on the WNYC "New Sounds" show. I loved what I heard and went and got this. You should too. The Bobs are in fine voice here. Except for Jane I don't know who the bass and tenor are, but those guys are grrrrreat. And they have quite a stylistic range. They like to play with different things, like pulp fiction (the film-noirish "Santa Ana Woman"), laundry (their "Laundry Cycle": "Pounded on a Rock", "Dictator in a Polo Shirt", the seductive "Signs on the Line" and the sweet doo-wop of "Share a Load"), Ollie North ("Golly, Ollie!"), killer bees ("godless commie bees!") and the vicissitudes of life "Now I Am a Hippie Again." Then they throw in their take on the Beatles' "You Can't Do That." It might sound like a mess, but the Bobs make it glorious somehow.
Try it. The Bobs' vocals take acapella to a new and different place, and they make it sound edgy.
Best of Breed!
by Jonathan RimorinI've been a fan of the Bobs since 1987! This album was the Bobs going big-time, doing such ambitious things here as an operetta ("The Laundry Cycle," comprising tracks 2-6 here) and a concept album (basically, the relationship between food, clothes, and men and women) and dated political references ("Dictator In A Polo Shirt" still works, but "Golly, Ollie!", a song about how Oliver North's snappy appearances on TV helps a family stay together will just confuse the young). My favorite songs are the simple, emotional ones: "Boy Around The Corner" and "But Then A Week Ago Last Thursday." Start with those if you're cherrypicking.
What an Awsome Group
by BurnboyI have been a fan of the bobs since 1996. This is one of my favorite albums of all times and I think the best album the bobs have made. Well worth buying the whole album. You will be listening to it over and over agin.
