Album Review

A new label (Hollywood Records) and a new guitar player (Keeley Davis) seem to have invigorated the mighty Sparta, resulting in an exchange of shadows with the often mightier At the Drive-In. While Sparta's previous releases have shown a knack for the brooding, bloody-fingered antics championed by bands like "...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead" and British Sea Power, the memorable moments have been few and far between, something that has changed considerably with Threes. It only take 30 seconds into "Untreatable Disease" to see the spark returned to the once meaningful term emo, as vocalist/guitarist Jim Ward finds the middle ground between Jeremy Enigk's "Jack-in-the-box" howl and Brandon Flowers cocky but ruined self-assurance. "Taking Back Control" may pilfer liberally from U2's "New Years Day," "Atlas" may steal a page or two from Coldplay, and "False Start" could launch a thousand stadium lighters, but Sparta, especially on this record, sounds like a beast that's broken its chains and is fighting between the road ahead and going back from whence it came, and it's that indecision that makes Threes so electrifying, even when it's not sure of what it wants to be.

Coldplay references

First off, Jim and Chris Martin are very good friends. I don't think he would have any real problem with any comparisons. They became friends when ATDI split and Coldplay was just breaking out. To this day they are still buddies, even touring with Sleepercar not too long ago. Oh, and Threes changed my life. Buy it. You will not be let down. Jim is from my hometown and I see him all the time. He's my absolute hero.

Good but sometimes too mellow

by Anthony Crane

This is an album which I'll probably listen to for the rest of my life and it won't get old, however at times it sounds a little more mellow than Porcelain or Wiretap. In my opinion, Sparta's greatest album was Wiretap Scars, but you can't really compare Threes very easily to any of their other albums. Even though it has more quiet parts which may be unappealling to some fans, the organization of the songs, how they were put together, and the overall skill of the band have all improved greatly as heard on this record. The songs also seem to flow together much better. Overall, the album is definitely something to look into and hopefully buy, but it isn't a HUGE earthshattering accomplishment by Sparta.

The best songs on Threes would probably be:

Red. Right. Return. - The instrumental of this song is brilliant. One of my favorite songs they have put out. Ward's voice really shines on this one, and when paired with Davis's it can bring chills down your spine.

Atlas - One of the better soft songs Sparta has put out, Atlas is probably one of their more emotional songs also. It goes from being haunting at first to radiant to relaxed and back again. If you're not buying the album definitely buy this song.

Unstitch Your Mouth - Also a very emotional piece, Unstitch is the first softer song on the album. Unlike Atlas however, the emotion tends to stay relatively the same but instead gradually gets stronger and stronger until it releases everything in a frenzy at the end of the song. Another must buy if you aren't getting the album.

Okay. I would gladly trade Mars Volta and Sparta for more Engine Down....
