As a music major in college with color-reference perfect pitch, the a capella compositions of Eric Whitacre are awe-inducing; a truly unique color-blend supported by the balance-diciplined Polyphony makes for a listening experience that can't be described more accurately than pure ecstacy. Some compositions may be more pleasing than others, but each one is a rare artifact, carefully excavated and washed clean to reveal its true beauty and complexity.
BYU Singers have performed many of the tracks that Layton decided to use in his album, however, in terms of professionality of the choir in its ability to blend, shape, tone, and have a chilling fluidity while, this impressed me, only having 22 members or so, Polyphony is more favorable by my ears. By the standpoint of interpretation, Singers' Staheli has a more dynamic interpretation; Layton preserved the fluidity by keeping the tempo more centered and less dynamic. Both make a great impression and both deserve credit for their work in preparing their compilations.
In all reality, this compilation is designed to celebrate the a capella works of Eric Whitacre from 1991 to 2002. Knowing he composed his first piece, 'Go, Lovely Rose' as an undergrad is quite an inspiration to any who plan to major in music and influence studies in composition. I find myself continually studying his pieces, dissecting it bit by bit and finding something new every time; even when I am not studying, it is pure bliss to listen to. I recommed this album to anyone.

Great Recording, but Whitacre isn't that impressive

I mean, yes. I love his stuff. It's great. But it's not that good. His use of his "specialty" chords, such as a root position major I with a perfect 4th/major second suspension. Those kinds of chords have been around for a long time. Check out Palestrina. He uses almost the EXACT same chords. And people don't know him. Yes, Whitacre is one of, if not the best, choral composers of today. But it's not fantastic.
