Album Review

Mythodea is subtitled "Music for the NASA Mission: 2001 Mars Odyssey," and it's certainly an epic work. If its aspirations were any higher, it wouldn't even need NASA to break earth's gravity. In essence, it's the focus of Vangelis' symphonic ambitions, utilizing not only an orchestra, but two sopranos and a full choir to go alongside his banks of keyboards. With an everything-plus-the-kitchen-sink attitude, "Movement 1" shows its Mars intentions by borrowing the 5/4 rhythm from Holst's "Mars" and overlaying it with symphonic stabs of melody and voices galore. Synth space noises, pomp, and afew circumstances.

A Primeval World. . . .

Mythodea is the most breathtaking music I have ever heard. Whenever I listen to it, I fall into a world that is dark and lyrical, wild, wonderful and primeval. For the length of this album, I am a wanderer in the mysteries of the universe.

Excellent!

OH...MY...GOD!!

For someone with so little in the way of "formal music schooling", this tour-de-force from Vangelis is simply astounding! For those of you who are fans of grand opera, massive choruses, inspired and inspirational musical lines and soaring melodies...this is the CD for you! I burned this one for my car stereo for the daily commute...a Blaupunkt 10-speaker 400 watt monster in my Audi...and, quite simply, forgot all about heavy traffic, backups and delays. If there is one piece of Vangelis music that I would say is equal to or slightly surpasses this entire piece, though, it would be Movement IV, from his lush "El Greco", featuring the legendary soprano Monserrat Caballe. Bottom line: buy this entire CD...and, Movement IV from "El Greco". Outstanding work...all!
