Thrift-Shop Hip Hop is Alive -- Gangsta Hip Hop is Dead.

It's funny how tired mainstream hip-hop scene has become these days, and yet right when I am about to get depressed... along come international acts like The Streets, Daddy Yankee, Lady Sovereign, Dizzee Rascal and others to inject some freshness and fun back into the genre. So the next yearning we all have I think is for this same breath of life to come back to our domestic music in the U.S. Well, if you wait for the gansters to do anything but formula, make some benjamins and smoke blunts, forget about it. BUT if you go elsewhere, like the underground bar scene in Columbus, Ohio and across the United States you're likely to find gems like The Lab Rats, MC Lars, the Ocean Ghosts and others. They're not easy to find, but I guess that's what makes this special. I'd describe the Lab Rats as thrift shop hip hop or hipster hop or whatever, generally a blue collar influenced music, but instrumentally and emotionally more meaningful than nearly anything else around simply due to the lack of pretense and the honest work they've put into being musicians and not just rappers. This music has the potential to create an entire scene in Columbus like grunge put Seattle on the map.

great album!!
