Album Review

The three cuts at the end of the score and official soundtrack for Blood Diamond are worth the price of the ticket alone: the Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars "Ankala," Emmanuel Jal and Abdel Cadir Salim's "Baai ," and Bal Burea's "When Da Dawg's Come Out to Play," with Masta Kent and Bullets Rhyme. These three cuts are masterful, poignant and rousing. That said, for a change James Newton Howard's score fits the material perfectly. It seems in recent years he's become less afraid of experimenting with world rhythms (check "Crossing the Bridge," "Fall of Freetown" and especially "Archer Sells Diamond") and big a*s guitars ("Village Attack"). In other words, this score is a piece of music that truly does stand on its own apart from the film. There is a journey involved in listening as well as thinking of it in terms of the film itself. His cues are tight, circular and never too long. This is one of his most successful scores in a decade.

Very Beautiful! Reflects the film Perfectly!

Now for all you guys complaining about the album only thing.....come one it's cheaper on itunes than a cd store. Anyway there is no reason not to buy this entire wonderful album. The movie was incredible....one of the best films ever made!! The music is very well done as it reflects the horror and beauty of Africa at the same time. We see its beauty through the tracks: Blood Diamond Main Titles, Crossing the Bridge, Your Mother Loves You, and Solomon Vandy. You can sense the violence in the tracks: Village Attack, the Fall of Freetown, Diamond Mine Bombed, and When Da Dawgs Come out to play. The rest paint a picture of the friendship between the main characters. This is a great soundtrack that stands on its own legs very level. The only complaint is the very annoying last three tracks that could've been good, if they hadn't been so long....! But if you enjoy African style music or are a fan of Howard than buy. If you are a fan of neither than think a little before you do....I reccomend it!

Inspirational, original, heart-wrenching....unforgettable.

Upon my first viewing of the film, I not only fell in love with the film itself but with Howard's brilliant score! I honestly am at a loss of words. Give me a second....okay.
Listening through the score takes you on a journey of its own. The seriousness and message of the film is expressed vividly with Howard's use of the African drums and vocals and beautiful theme. Man, what a theme. Brings me to tears everytime I listen to it. I even enjoy the pieces such as "Village Attack" and "Fall of Freetown" containing the electric guitar..a brilliant and suitable way of representing the threatening, menacing presence of the RUF.
I have always been an admirer of Howard's works whether it's his hauntingly beautiful works for M. Night Shaymalan or his adventurous and awe-inspiring music for Disney's 'Dinosaur' and even 'Treasure Planet'. But let me tell you, this score most possibly is his best effort yet...and he never seems to run out of good music. This score is worth the money if you are looking for a score that you can sit back and relax to....music to drown out the world and take you on a journey of your own.

I only wanted one song...

I like the song, "when da dawgs come out to play," but i have to ask, why the hell do i have to pay $9.99 for it? Honestly, what is with this "album only" crap? I guess its just "Good Ol' Capitalism" in action. The rich get richer by screwing over the small guys. Much like Seirra Leone... Just goes to show that people never learn...
