iTunes Review

Philip Glass' pioneering minimalism has become an integral part of the contemporary film scoring palette, a fact that perhaps inspired the composer to push his own cinematic work in new and often surprising ways in recent years on films such as Kundun and The Hours — and on this score for Richard Eyre's disturbing psychological drama, music that also netted Glass his first Academy Award nomination. The composer has revealed he wrote the film's score from the disintegrating psychological viewpoint of the character portrayed by fellow Oscar nominee Judi Dench, a gambit that pays some surprising dividends. There are passages that gratifyingly sound more like the best of Bernard Herrmann's tense, brooding work for Hitchcock than Glass himself, testament to how far the latter has challenged himself. Yet when the minimalist mainstay does revert to the repetitive arpeggios that have too easily caricatured his work, they’re now the perfect accompaniment for the disturbed, obsessive mindset they portray.

So good!

I love this album. I never get tired of it, and never will. My personal favorite is Sheba & Steven, but they're all spectacular.

Another of Glas' Best

Philip Glas once again proves that his skill and talent for portraying beauty through music is virtually unmatched. Though this score does contain some simmilarities to his previous work on 'The Illusionist', the music in this film helps to enrich the overall tone or mood that is set by the excellent portrayals of Judi Dench's psychotic spinster, and Cate Blanchett's adulturous teacher. Wonderful score, and a great addition to any Glas collection.

Not An Introduction To Glass

Those who are used to Glass' consistently excellent standard of composure will find this an excellent addition to their collection. However, if you don't own any of his greater works (Einstein and Koyaanisqatsi specifically), I really wouldn't recommend this purchase. While enjoyable and well-composed, Glass' scores just don't compare to his operas, and it would be a disservice to oneself to buy this in the stead of his brilliant operatic composures. Having more or less all of the Glass music available on iTunes, I have purchased this to expand my Glass library. However, if I hadn't so far bought any albums, I would never consider making ths my first purchase.

Yes, the music is excellent. But this will really only appeal to seasoned Glass listeners. If you have listened extensively to his works, you will appreciate the many hallmarks and themes of his compositions, which really enhances the album in a way novices simply can't appreciate. If you are unfamiliar with Glass' works, and are considering purchasing your first Glass album, please buy Einstein on the Beach or one of the Qatsi albums before you base your first impression on this less prolific album.
