Album Review

Machine Head's The Blackening is an over-the-top rage and pummelfest with all the qualities that earned the group its enormous fan base by touring and recording. The record starts out unlikely enough, and gladly enough, with a left-of-center call to arms to the youth of this nation to not accept blindly the words (and threats) of "patriotic brutes." It calls for rage with triple-timed slamming beats and blistering lead guitar breaks, as the piece alternates between death metal, industrial metal, thrash and prog. It blends seamlessly. At ten-and-half minutes for an opening cut, one can tell this is no original heavy metal record. "Beautiful Mourning" is anything but gothic heavy metal; it begins with a taut, explosive riff matched by the drum kit, and then Robb Flynn is off and running, celebrating being "taken under" by her, and the seductive power of both women and death. The thrash element here rivals Slayer at their very best, and breaks new ground within the realm of composition for aggressive music. The intense dual arpeggios between both guitarists — Flynn and Phil Demmel on "Aesthetics of Hate" (as just one example) are among the tightest ever. The drama produced by Dave McClain's blastbeats and the steady guidance of Adam Duce's basslines comprise a deeply intuitive rhythm section for the six-stringers to fly from. They don't so much fly as fight, though. Other standouts include "Halo," and "Now I Lay Thee Down." Recommended.

The Master of Puppets for the 21st Century

I am speechless...I truly am. Saying that this album is just great like the iTunes rating system says is NOT GOOD ENOUGH!

Probably the best way to describe this album is this: It will crush your skull in to the point of no return! It will tie you down and stretch you until you beg for mercy! It won't brighten your day, it will BLACKEN it!

Clenching The Fists of Dissent: 10/10 - The perfect way to open the album. I love the final breakdown at the end the most.
Beautiful Mourning: 10/10 - The harmonics used on this are some of the best I've heard in a long time. And Flynns singing voice works great for this song.
Aesthetics Of Hate: 9/10 - This song took a while for me to like, but once I did, I never looked back. The solo's in this are absolutely beautiful.
Now I Lay Thee Down: 10/10 - Once again, another great song with a slower tempo than some of the others on this album.
Slanderous: 9/10 - Flynn is making a great point on hatred and racism in this song. I think it worked really well. Great headbanger!
Halo: 10/10 - If you don't feel like totally going nuts when the main riff kicks in, then you're not a true metal head, END OF STORY!
Wolves: 8/10 - The weakest track on the album in my opinion. It's extremely close to getting a 9 but I don't have the heart to give it that. Still not a bad track by any means.
A Farewell To Arms: 10/10 - Amazing, absolutley amazing! The lyrics: Perfect! The Sound: Perfect! The Everything: PERFECT!

Machine Head have always been a good band, but this album makes them great if not legendary. Metallica wish they could still write this good and sound this good. "Halo" is so epic it's possibly the only song EVER worthy enough to be compared to "Master of Puppets" and "Raining Blood". Unfortunately this is 2009 and albums like this don't sell anymore.....leave that to Miley Cyrus and The Jonas Brothers (what jokes they are).
