iTunes Review

The Story, Brandi Carlile’s second release, clearly announces the arrival of big talent. Her songwriting is accomplished, ambitious, and unabashedly emotional, and she puts them across with her huge voice — clear, strong, and passionate — over which she has amazing control; she could accurately be compared to Pasty Cline, k.d. lang, and Neko Case. Tastefully produced by T-Bone Burnett, the overall sound is spacious and warm, with subtle ambient touches added for extra texture. Even the relatively stripped-down tunes like “Josephine” and “Downpour” come across as lushly layered. She also rocks several powerchord anthems, particularly the fist-pumping title track in which she kicks into vocal overdrive on the chorus during one of the album’s more memorable and intense moments. Her melodies are pure and she naturally blends elements of country, gospel, and rock into her sound. There’s also a wealth of excellent harmony singing here by brothers Phil and Tim Hanseroth, who play bass and guitar respectively, as well as by special guests the Indigo Girls, who provide gorgeous backing vocals on “Cannonball.” Carefully constructed and arranged, The Story aims for epic and mostly succeeds, and Carlile should earn many loyal listeners on the strength of this sophomore release.

Can't get enough.

I heard Brandi on the last Grey's Anatomy. Bought 1 album. Loved it so much I bought another. Couldn't believe there wasn't a single cut I didn't love. I had to get the rest.

This may sound strange, but my six-year-old son loves this music. Now let's list the other musicians my son loves. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, lesser-known but great Dr. Dog, The Gourds, Bob Marley. I'm in no way comparing this musician to any of those. My point is, the kid has fantastic taste and he loves Brandi.

This is a steal at $7.99

I've taken the long way to get to this CD. a couple of covers (creep and hallelujah) and then 'the story' once the GM commercial hit. i've now seen her in concert 3 times this year.

This is a steal of a price for a whole album. As i continue to toggle between her latest CD and this one I'm amazed at how fantastic they both are. This cd reminds me a lot of the first time I found Sarah and Tori. This is a very emotional CD.

Try turpentine and wasted. Cannonball is now on my permanent play list too. I'm a big fan of the live version of 'late morning lullaby'. You might also want to check out one of her opening acts, Angel Taylor.

If you don't love this disc, you simply have no taste in great music :-)
