A wonderful find!!
by Sturat13I first came upon Vicki Silbert's music on MySpace about 6 months ago. The first thing that attracted me (aside from her great sense of humor) was her voice. What a strong and emotional instrument it is. Her writing is top notch...wonderful wry insights into the human condition. The musicianship on the album befits her many talents. I strongly and lovingly recommend this wonderful artist and her music to you.
The Power of Small
by SoloTaskBittybox is the brainchild of Vicki Silbert, a veteran of L.A.'s art rock scene who, after a considerable hiatus, has finally encapsulated her reperatoire in Smalltime, her premiere studio release. The intimacy of studio suits these sparely arranged, moody and very visual songs nicely; the styles vary from coffeehouse hipster blues to the border of grunge with a not-so-overbearing edge. Vicki's soulful, melodic voice with its whip warble almost suggests Gwen Stefani, with a tad more warmth. The lyrics cover the various and ironic hands life deals us, misfortunes of the fortunate, romantic quirks and more than a couple of swipes at the music industry. Bittybox offers a fresh (if somewhat dark at times) departure from the bloated pretentiousness of Consumer Music, a happy reminder that craft and originality is alive and well just under the radar. The title track says it all — for creative freedom, keep it small.
Awesome Indy, Jazzy, Goodness!
by ajoliefanatic21I found bittybox via myspace and really fell in love with "Ride", who knew cars could be so sexy? I was just getting into Jazz at the time, and loved this because it is jazzy and big band and alt rock all kinda mixed together in a really enticing way. I bought the CD and fell in love with "Lucky One" and "Try". These songs really spoke to me. A lot of the content is about making music and being a musician and the industry, but I find it isn't so specific and that I can relate the songs to my own life in a meaningful way. The album sounds great and is definitely eclectic musically and lyrically. This album is cross-generational, my friends love it, but hey, so does my mom!
