iTunes Review

While Spells doesn’t traverse the same emotional terrain as 2004’s epic breakup album Conductor, it offers an even more vibrant visualization of grandeur. Producer Bill Racine — who had previously mixed and engineered albums for Modest Mouse, Flaming Lips, and Phantom Planet — buffs the Comas sounds to a glistening sheen. The Flaming Lips remain a major touchstone for the band, although songs like “Now I’m a Spider,” “Light the Pad,” and “Sarah T.” also look towards the sonic majesty of U2 circa Achtung Baby. In his quest for the perfect pop song Andy Herod has also been listening to Rivers Cuomo, and “Red Microphones,” “Hannah T.,” and “Come My Sunshine” share more than a little something with Weezer’s juxtaposition of low-end chug and emotional fragility. Once again, Herod’s considered blend of fuzz-box rock and pop sugar — underscored by a flair for melodrama — proves to be a winning formula in the indie-pop arena.

...how crap bands like fall out boy and jonas brothers are even allowed to live while really talented people like the comas are basically unknown.

The best rock album Ive heard in a long time. A handful are so stand-out on this album that they may outshine the rest (still really good songs) Ive picked up several albums of the comas only to find more gems like these. Musically, lyrically all fantastic songs. comas have been on my ipod loop for the past year

Great music!

It's nice to see a small band come together with such great sound! It's bands like this that we need more of so the music does not become so generic that we can't tell bands and individual musicians apart.

Biography

Formed: 1998 in Chapel Hill, NC

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s

The Comas formed in Chapel Hill, NC, in March 1998 as a joke country band, a sort of counterweight to the hyped No Depression movement. Before long, however, both the "joke" and the "country" parts of the concept were eliminated, thus allowing the band to develop into a quirky alternative rock outfit....
