Memphis Magic
by PannellHaving grown up in good ol' Memphis, I am always on the prowl for the "next big thing" to come out the dirty south's home of all things musically cool. The greatest thing about the Memphis music scene is that no single genre dominates the landscape. This proves to be a good thing, as the fellas in The Central Standards do not easily fit into any genre themselves. Like bastard sons of REM, the Talking Heads, with a little Crowded House thrown in, they make a sound unmatched by many others. The vocals are tight, interlaced with beautiful harmonies. The lyrics are sharp, witty and introspective all at the same time. They are a perfect listen for a drive on a fall day with the windows rolled down, or for a cold damp winter night when your heart is broken. Of their 2 releases, I like this CD better. The songs range from trying to understand love (Otis Redding Song) to unrequited love (Still Stay) with a little bit of lyrical silliness thrtown in here and there. It is great music. Live they are tons of fun and each guys plays hard and tight. It is a shame that they rarely play out of the River City, but if you are ever in town and have the chance to catch a rare live show, don't miss it! Buy the CD. I think you'll love it.
