Album Review

Love it or hate it, the Dear Hunter's Act II: The Meaning of, And All Things Regarding, Ms. Leading is certainly a grandiose project filled with ambition. The two act, isolation-themed rock opera is filled with intricate instrumentation and bipolar change-ups that recall Mr. Bungle's California or Mars Volta's De-Loused in the Comatorium with aspects of Sufjan Stevens' Illinoise. The production is phenomenal, and the multi-layered songs feature unexpected dynamic changes, with parts dropping in and out with ease like a camera cutting from one scene to another. Soundscapes change drastically several times within a single number, turning from a guitar-based prog rock blazer to gritty Dixieland, then switching over to a cello and harp concerto. "Smiling Swine" flips nimbly between a Queens of the Stone Age fill to a peppy Spoon bit and then into a symphonic reverberated Beach Boys bridge. It's a dizzying experience, and enough to hold the attention of even the most hyperactive mind, even when the songs reach nine-and-a-half minutes long. However, the downside is that it might take some time to get past the vocals, which sometimes feel forced and whiney with a nasally pop-punk tinge in the vain of Fall Out Boy. Worse yet, the lyrical content is sometimes sappy and reads like it came directly from the pages of an emo teen's journal ("Darkness, hesitation, I fell into her arms/Breathe in, this is amazing/Breathe out, this is amazing/She removed her clothes and all of the world shined.") Luckily, with the scope of the symphonic and dramatic backdrop, the words feel deeper and more meaningful or are often easily ignored. Jam-packed with musical ideas and mood shifts, this disc becomes increasingly rewarding after repeated listens and should especially appeal to aspiring producers and musicians.

I just saw them in concert and now greatly respect them. All three albums are great but this one is amazing!!!!!!!. An absolute journey of instrumentation, and Casey's vocals express so much emotion. Great album. WOW.

Breath In, This Is Amazing

It's difficult to catagorize The Dear Hunter. I understand that, if you don't like highly produced, thoroughly poetic music, they might seem a little bit pretentious and a tad lost in themselves; and, there is a grain of truth in that statement. The lyrics can seem a little over dramatic, and the music can feel a little orchestral for riding to work on a foggy Friday morning. But, here's a secret that the writer of the Itunes analysis obviously was not aware of: the lyrics and the music are meant to sound that way!
This album tracks the life of a wayward country teenager (the same Boy from Act One)trudging through some of the rougher parts of town. Sometimes, it's told in the voice of the Oracles, who cryptically foretell the future of the Boy. Some of the time, its in third person, giving us a more broad view of the events at hand. And, as with the quote mentioned by the Itunes reviewer, sometimes its torn from the journal entries of a distraught teenage boy in way over his head. Therefore, if that's how it sounds, than Casey is doing his job right. If sometimes he sounds whiney, then once again, he's giving you the story as it was meant to be told.
So, if you're in the mood to be transported into another world, into the lives of people not so different from yourself, into the imposing symphonic landscape painted by the Dear Hunter, but are worried about Casey Crescendo's ability to refrain from sounding over-dramatic; please, think of this: when you were fifteen (no matter what gender you were), weren't you?

Obviously great.

This album, is pure win.
I find it so...strange yet interesting how TDH always seems to keep to the alternative genre, but at the same time they can easily slide this blues-y tone into all of it. I really have respect for these guys-they have GREAT lyrics, everything is catchy, and even The Lake and The River, nine minutes long (!) and amazing, no second is wasted. And that is not dramatic :P
This is a must have.

The Dear Hunter started as a solo side project by singer and keyboardist Casey Crescenzo, formerly a key member of Boston emo act the Receiving End of Sirens. An outlet for Crescenzo's songs that didn't fit the Receiving End of Sirens' heavy post-hardcore vibe, the Dear Hunter was initially envisioned...
