wow

i heard them play live before i even got the album. i am very impressed at their ability to sound as amazing and maintain this eerie, haunting, yet soothing melody live just as well as recorded in the album. great band, really talented, instrumental variety makes for a unique sound. one of the best kept secrets.

Seeing Them Live Changed My Life

I saw them perform at Cal State Fullerton, and picked up there first cd which really opened up my ear for music (which I thought was already pretty wide open from hip hop to doo wop and everything in between...yes even country). Phoenix has the ability to send you through a real ride using their control of their instruments and the strategically placed vocals that play secondary to the awesome instrumentals. This album should be listened to by all music lovers who want more out of their music than just a catchy song that lasts a month or two....I've been listening to their music for years now and it seems like I noticed a little more after every listen.

*Favorite Track: Disco Funeral...I love when it hits the 17 sec. mark!

A Musical Journey

by Luis Alberto

I had the fortune to come across Phoenix and the Turtle one summer a few years ago. Their second album is a treak through harmonic peaks and valleys. Piano, violin, chello instrumentations add to the sprawling compositions. One standout song is "Judy You're not Yourself Today" with a lovely piano thrown together with sweet male and female vocals, an awesome drum beat, and the mysterious lyrics converging to form a great song. My only difficulty with the album is "Pulling the Wool" which uses the paridoxical sound bite of George W. Bush saying "When we talk about war we're really talking about peace" one too many times.

Strongly reccomended for fans of Sufjan Stevens, Arcade Fire, and The Album Leaf.
