Album Review

They look for all the world like one more angsty emo band, and there certainly is plenty of emotion in the Junior Varsity's songwriting — the choruses tend to be big and cathartic, and the guitars tend to be big and dense, and the lyrics are earnest rather than cynical. But when the first song on the album begins with the line "Why don't we just subtract all that's in the abstract," you know you're dealing with something that's going to go just a little bit deeper than the usual unfocused anger at "this" and the usual screaming protestations of vulnerability. As rewarding as the lyrics turn out to be, though, you may find yourself being constantly distracted from them by the inventive and hooky arrangements: the tricky time changes and anthemic hooks of "Wünderdrug," the slightly goofy and subtly swinging "St. Louis," the blatantly jazzy and completely swinging title track (with horns!), and the brilliant power pop of "I Went Blind." There's an instrumental that prominently features cello and acoustic guitar — it's pretty and it technically impressive, but it feels like a distraction from the brilliance of the songs. Very highly recommended.

After hearing an early demo of "the sky", I knew this album would be great. Low and behold, it's more then I expected. The junior varsity has one of the most fun live shows, and such a devoted fan base. This cd is stellar and shouldn't be passed up. Songs like "lungs" and "the greatest" keep the cd upbeat, while mellow added sax by the keyboard player nick in the song "cinematographic" cant be passed up. Buy the cd please :]

the junior varsity are geniouses. their music isn't the catchiest, but it's complex and very interesting, not anything like the mainstream. this isn't why i love them, because i can still listen to bands like All time low and fall out boy and not be particularly bothered, but it's refreshing to hear TJV. this cd, along with Wide eyed and their first one, are all great, but i think this is their best overall (although check out the song Get Comfortable, it's one of the best songs ive ever heard).

amazing stuff to check out: (although id recommend buying the whole album)
The Sky! - this is a GREAT song, the guitar line is soo good. the choruses are perfect too
Memory made easy - such a well writen song, and the acoustic guitar line is amazing. goes great with the cello or whatever that is.
lungs - has a very different beat and undertone from what you usually hear. the bass line is so catchy and adds so much during the verses, and the drums during the choruses really change stuff around... tied for my favorite song on the cd.

soo yea.... the junior varsity arent like your average band, they're waaaay better. too bad they broke up, even after 3 albums they had so much potential...

Simply Amazing
