Album Review

If you were buying pop music during the late '80s, then you'll immediately understand where Telephone (led by former Dandy Warhol Eric Hedford) is coming from. The band is a guitar-synthesizer-bass-drums quartet that uses sci-fi synth effects and big, dense guitar sounds with equal enthusiasm, and Hedford's vocals are declamatory and charmingly unaffected, and are frequently layered on top of each other in blissfully pretty harmonies even as the guitars churn angrily underneath. Hooks like these come either from preternatural talent or from long and hard experience; Hedford definitely has the latter and may also be blessed with the former. Highlight tracks include "Automatic," which sounds quite a bit like a (slightly) warmer version of vintage New Order; the sweetly tuneful "Mystery Girl" (which features not only "bah bah bah bahs" but also "doot doot doot doos"); the downright punky "Pt. 2" of "The Visitor, Pt. 1 & 2"; and the brilliant "Goodbye," which is built on a Phil Spector-ish drum and tambourine part. Also notice the subtly elegant jangle pop guitar picking on "In December." Very highly recommended.

Don't sell out unless it pays well!

Ultra hip from Portland. Who else to teach Guster, and the Shin's how to do it? Hedford is a master in the studio. Rock on to Telephone!

I hadn't heard from Telephone in years since they were part of a Shoegazer compilation some years ago in the NW. So glad to have thought of them again and to have downloaded what I have. They've only gotten better... the best of what's Mancunian and the best of what's Portland. And it makes me want to dance. Awesome.

Bad Graphics - Great Album :)

This is a really great album form a great band that no one knows about outside of their hometown of Portland, OR. Sounds like Film School meets old (good) Dandy Warhols with a touch of 80's kitch for fun. Mr 2 star above can hump a leg. I just turned a couple people onto it and they bought it after listening to 5 or 6 previews. Hope to hear more from these guys. Oh, great sounding album too. Nice job on the recording/mix. :)
