iTunes Review

Aptly named, The Velvet Underground never achieved mainstream success during their initial tour of duty in the late ‘60s. The ensuing years saw their influence deepen and expand among the punk, new wave, no wave, and post-punk groups that followed in future decades. This, their 1967 debut, is a monster: powerfully diverse and innovative in every respect. From the sleepy dream pop of “Sunday Morning” through the abrasive viola scrapings of “The Black Angel’s Death Song” and rambunctious piano pounding behind “I’m Waiting for the Man,” to the lyrical taboos of “Venus In Furs” (S&M), and “Heroin” (drugs), The Velvet Underground & Nico represented a very sharp contrast to the era’s peace and love vibrations. In addition, the album featured German actress and chanteuse Nico on several tracks — “Femme Fatale,” “I’ll Be Your Mirror” and “All Tomorrow’s Parties” — that furthered the group’s exotic appeal. Andy Warhol’s “producer” role was more in name and promotion than any actual sonic input. The band, featuring Lou Reed and conservatory-trained John Cale, were in no need of outside influence.

This is Rock and Roll

by toiletexaminer

This album is at least in the list of top five greatest rock albums ever. I would also say that The Velvet Underground is the greatest rock band ever second only to the Beatles. They defined what rock was, what it could be, and what it would be. They made the Rolling Stones look like total pussies. Nothing out in '67 sounded within a lightyear of what this album sounded like. All of the songs are nuts. They all are loud, exciting, and dangerous. And that's what rock and roll is.

Better than a bullet through the temple.

This record ruined my life. And the lives of my friends. Try it. You'll like it.

A Moment In Time

I have never heard anything like this before. I have been listening to music since I was born. I have been buying cd's and records for a long time and I'm ashamed to admit I didn't know brilliant this album was until this year(2009.) It's as if I've been living with my head in a drawer. I was always familliar with the album cover and the track "heroine." I know who Lou Reed is. I have read how the VU was never apprciated during their tenure together. I believe it's because they were (and still are) miles away from anything else out there. I agree that this album at first may be a tough listen, if you find this being the case I recommend listening to the album "Loaded" first.

Few rock groups can claim to have broken so much new territory, and maintain such consistent brilliance on record, as the Velvet Underground during their brief lifespan. It was the group's lot to be ahead of, or at least out of step with, their time. The mid- to late '60s was an era of explosive growth...
