iTunes Review

Zap Mama has come a long way. What began in 1990 as a female quintet performing primarily a cappella melodies based on traditional pygmy music has morphed into a full-blown world fusion swirl of African rhythms and American funk and soul. As the sound has changed, so has the personnel — Zap Mama is down to one singer, founding member Marie Daulne, who performs all of the lead vocals (and most of the backing vocals) along with various syncopated grunts, whoops and clicks. She also wrote, arranged and produced most of the songs, but she didn't create Supermoon alone — about 50 musicians in all appear on this recording, including a few high profile guests like bassist Me’shell N’degeocello, drummer Tony Allen and Michael Franti. Daulne possesses amazing vocal control and her buoyant and rich voice carries both the melody and rhythm, especially on the funkier numbers like “Toma Taboo” and “Kwenda,” each of which have horn sections that sound straight out of the JB’s playbook. There are some slower moments, such as the ballad “Where Are You,” but Supermoon is primarily a pleasing collision of sounds and styles that works best as a groove album.

Gabi Rojas danced to this on SYTYCD, and I've been looking for the song ever since. Moonray is so beautiful. It inspires movement and thought. I'm so happy that SYTYCD is back so I can fill my IPOD this summer with awesome music like this.

Luv it...but...is there more?

Maybe it's just me and my screwy computer, but, in addition to the Digital Booklet, there are only three tracks from the album that are available: "1,000 Ways," "Gati," and "Where Are You?" Which is what I want to ask, Where are you? I KNOW that there are more tracks, like the one I INTENDED to buy but now can't, "Princess Kesia". Again, maybe it's just my screwy computer and your wasting your time reading this. (Sorry if your wasting your time reading this) All I want are some answers.

Zap Who???

I was invited to see a concert starring Zap Mama and I was all like, "Zap who"?. What a fool I've been to not have known who this woman was until I heard/seen her LIVE. All I can say is, this woman is AMAZING! Her musicianship, the background singers, and of course the musicians did what music has been missing for a long time...and that's ART! Simply wonderful. ZAP MAMA - I know you now!

Zap Mama is an all-female a cappella quintet founded by Zaire native Marie Daulne. Daulne's father was killed during the revolution of 1960 while her mother was pregnant with her, so the remainder of the family fled to the forests and found refuge with a tribe of pygmies. Daulne was raised primarily...
