iTunes Review

While her artsy experimentation demands to be heard in the context of her original studio albums if only to witness the evolution of her sound and ideas, Bjork’s freestyling pop thrown into the “Greatest Hits” blender offers things up in a populist format — the songs were picked by her fans — and allows you to hear her music inside out. While her solo success since leaving Iceland’s Sugarcubes has been strong, and certain key songs represent her well (“Human Behaviour,” “Army of Me,” “Hidden Place”), Bjork is not your traditional “singles” artist. This collection spans her first decade, 1992-2002, and provides a starting point that touches on each building block of her career, from the unexpected electronic pop nuance of her international debut solo album appropriately titled Debut (1990’s Gling-Glo was initially only available in Iceland) to the experimental and confident mid-career grooves of Post and Homogenic and onward to the quiet hypnosis of Vespertine. Despite a number of pop hooks, Bjork is never easy listening, but a challenging whirl of experience that deepens as her askew visions come into balance over time.

The Best from the Best

I created an album of all of my favorite Bjork Songs years ago. This album has all of my favorites and then a few other great tracks I also love. A+++ for this one.

A Good Entrypoint

by Labann

I endorse to new listeners because it is a good span of a remarkable decade. There are wonderful tracks on every album not represented here, particularly from Medulla and Volta, many of which fans prefer.

Björk has been extremely busy creating an entire universe unparalleled in music. Not to be overlooked are her subtle craftsmanship, emotional genius, multilayered harmonies, superior production values, unique vision of what constitutes an auditory experience, voice exuded in frequencies and harmonics unlike anything on earth, and womanly perspective seldom so clearly articulated. Contempt for repeating successes, introduction of new instruments and sources of sound, never stuck on deriative sameness, no two beats alike: few artists in history that have achieved what she already has.

People easily pleased by Elvis may never appreciate this, but it doesn't matter. Björk is a living treasure on a mission to amaze the rest of us. It may only be pop that rivals any superstar, but it's surely sweet brain candy and thoroughly addictive. This is just a start. Find out just how deep the rabbit hole goes...

Ahead of her time...

It's so scary how ahead of the pack this talented singer is! I remember when the Sugarcubes first crossed the shore. Amazing!!! Her voice was ethereal! Still is! She's so forward thinking!!! She's not a follower, and people will just have to learn to accept that. Bjork opened my eyes to the Icelandic music scene. I'd buy this, but I already own these songs!

Björk first came to prominence as one of the lead vocalists of the avant pop Icelandic sextet the Sugarcubes, but when she launched a solo career after the group's 1992 demise, she quickly eclipsed her old band's popularity. Instead of following in the Sugarcubes' arty guitar rock pretensions, Björk...
