Album Review
Somewhat of an anomaly on the otherwise more conservative, pop-punk and hardcore oriented Victory Records label, Between the Buried and Me play a progressive style of extreme metal that attempts to incorporate a wide range of styles and moods alongside its staple diet of death and power metal. To their credit, with Colors, they manage the transitions very well: frenetic, thrashy riffs are seamlessly traded for thumping metalcore breakdowns, while death grunts and growls sit well alongside soft melodic vocal lines and dense, Porcupine Tree-aping harmonies. Opener "Foam Born, Pt. A: The Backtrack" marries sappy '70s rock piano schlock with furious tapped guitar textures, flowing seamlessly into the aggressive death metal riffing of "Foam Born, Pt. B: The Decade of Statues" and centerpiece "Informal Gluttony." Each of the eight tracks is designed to flow into the next, creating the impression of a continuously evolving piece rather than a collection of tracks, but it's a mixed bag musically. At times the creativity and emotional lure of the material is enchanting, but too often Between the Buried and Me force a constant stream of evolving riffs (it is primarily a guitarist's album) instead of exploring the full depth of the original idea. The effect is less of continuous evolution, than a constant stream of promising and half-baked ideas, and in this instance the color of monotony is rarely too far away.

by msaadidinThis album is unbelievable. Between the Buried and Me are masters of composition and instrumentation, and Colors shows it. I swear I have never heard so many different styles of music beautifully, and seamlessly, incorporated into one album. This album is a breath of minty, fresh air to all progressive music. If you have a good hour, just sit down and listen to this record all the way through...no interruptions. You'll feel like you traveled around the world, into space, and back into your home...it's that good. Each song flows into the next like no one's business. One would be surprised to hear songs like "(B) the Decade of Statues" and "Viridian" on the same album, but BTBAM make it work, and they make it work very well! All I can say is that this album receives 100% of my praise, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for something to completely change what they thought about musical possibilities. BUY THIS ALBUM!
strong, but doesn
by disappearingboxIndividually each part of the album or a song is well done and at times achieve excellence. But as a whole, it doesn't come together as a united song or album. They feel too cut-and-paste giving the sense that the tracks should have been broken up and treated as smaller songs instead of 11-minute chimeras or an album long epic.
That said, the album is overall good and recomended for the more prog minded metalhead.
But be warned if you do not enjoy anything prog or constatly shifting song structures: this album is not for you.
Perfect.
by RMM86This is honestly the perfect album to me. The breakdowns are amazing, Paul and Dustie tear it up on guitar, Blake is a freakin' beast at the drums, Dan kills on bass without you even realizing at first, and Tommy absolutely destroys. Every moment in this album is perfect, and absolutely awe-inspiring at that. I'd select a couple songs to recommend, except that you absolutely should not only buy one or two songs, you should buy the whole album. Colors is beautiful.
Also, to who ever said they fast-forward through the parts with screaming? You just missed everything, so you might want to go listen to something else. Maybe a band that you're not ashamed of.
