iTunes Review

This GRAMMY®-winning album isn’t simply a collection of Joni Mitchell covers by the pianist Herbie Hancock; it’s an expansive tribute album that imaginatively honors the legendary Canadian singer/songwriter from a number of different angles. River features jazz classics that you know Joni must dig; guest vocalists performing Mitchell’s songs; instrumental versions of her tunes; and an appearance by Joni herself on “Tea Leaf Prophecy.” The album is full of surprises. An instrumental version of “Both Sides Now” is a radical reimagining of the original, and a version of Wayne Shorter’s “Nefertiti” reworks the 60s classic to great effect. The Brazilian vocalist Luciana Souza strongly evokes Mitchell on “Amelia,” but she brings her own touch to the song, too. Tina Turner never sounded as jazzy as she does on “Edith and the Kingpin.” Leonard Cohen’s spoken word performance on “The Jungle Line” is gripping, but “Court and Spark,” sung by Norah Jones, might be the disc’s most intriguing track. Hancock, as restrained and inventive here as he is on the rest of the album, quietly dazzles, and Jones sounds great on this drifting, moody version. The band — Hancock, Shorter, guitarist Lionel Loueke, bassist Dave Holland, and drummer Vinnie Colaiuta — is superb. River is a wonderful homage to Mitchell and an excellent jazz album in its own right.

A Stunning Peice

by ModernMusicMaster

The first song that really drew me to this album was "Solitude". Herbie's sensitive and sylistic playing was breathtaking and the song quickly became one of my favorites. As I listened to the album, I was struck by the seamless flow of the album--beautiful singers and moving lyrics interposed with haunting instrumentals. Each song is a story in itself and is played/sung to perfection. The list of guest musicians on this album reads like a who's who but no one individual stands out--they are each challanged and succeed to add to the overall excellence of the album. Herbie certainly hasn't lost his touch and was very much deserving of the Grammy that he recieved.

Repositioned and reinvented

What I love most about this album is what the music on this album does to reposition the singers to re-invent themselves. Tina Turner singing Edith and the Kingpin, starts off with her readily recognizable "Tina" voice and after a few bars, she's repositioned by the context of the music such that I'm hearing a Tina Turner that I've never heard before - and I LOVE what emerges because it is like hearing to her voice for the very first time - or at least "rediscovering" it in a different setting that allows her to show us something more of how amazing she is as a performer. A similar phenomenon occurs for me with the other singers on this album - I am thrilled by what I am hearing. Leonard Cohen's delivery of The Jungle Line is breath-takingly powerful in all its simplicity.

I Love It.

Herbie Hancock will always be one of the most revered and controversial figures in jazz — just as his employer/mentor Miles Davis was when he was alive. Unlike Miles, who pressed ahead relentlessly and never looked back until near the very end, Hancock has cut a zigzagging forward path, shuttling...
