iTunes Review

John Fogerty established his career in the late-‘60s and early ‘70s as one of the era’s most concise social commentators, packing thoughtful ripostes into the three-minute magic of Creedence Clearwater Revival tunes such as “Fortunate Son,” “Who’ll Stop the Rain” and “Lodi” among the many. For years, Fogerty, the victim of ill-advised contracts, would not perform Creedence tunes and the only clue to his past was the stylistic consistency he brought to his current work. He now plays those older Creedence tunes and has re-signed to the record label that first brought him if not his fortune then his fame. 2007’s Revival is Fogerty’s most overt nod to his legacy. The sound is pure classic rock, stark, spare guitars stretched over sturdy grooves of perfectly locked-in bass and drums. The album sounds much like those old CCR albums, as if the playing was happening right there in the living room. ‘Don’t You Wish It Was True” features tight harmonies and Fogerty’s signature guitar tone. “Creedence Song” makes self-references to his music’s place in people’s lives, while “Long Dark Night” takes direct aim at world issues, naming names and casting blame. Fogerty’s always been a sentimentalist and a traditionalist aching for a past that has at least existed in part because he willed it to be.

Blue Moon Swamp and Centerfield really didn't do anything for me, I liked it but only played them a few times each. Revival is exactly that! A revival of John doing what john does best. Great songs, great lyrics, great hooks and grooves. If you liked early Creedence you'll love Revival. Thanks John and glad you stayed the course and fought to do your own sound again. Perfectly done.

I miss the "old" John Fogerty...

Sometimes great rockers get domesticated and they lose their edge. The happiness of having a wife and kids and great success has an effect on the creations of the artist. It's wonderful to see your heroes happy. Especially someone like John Fogerty, who's been through hell and back. But sometimes it doesn't inspire particularly good songs or music. There is nothing on this album that compares to "Fortunate Son", "The Old Man Down the Road", etc. The songs sound tired and cliched, and Fogerty's playing is uninspiring. There's nothing new or fresh here. In fact, it sounds like he's just treading (Creedence Clear)water. His "politcal" songs here just sound trite. He's still got that incredible Fogerty voice, though. I hope he has another "Centerfield" in him next time around. I wish that he'd try having someone else produce his next album other than himself. Bring on the hate. I can take it. I've been a Fogerty Fan for 40 years...

Typical album these days, 3 good songs 9 useless filler songs.

I am an absolutely huge CCR/John Fogerty fan, most of his songs will stand the test of time.
I have seen him live 3 times in the last 3 years. The album track order of this album is predictable in the fact that how good the songs are is the order it goes in. Don't You Wish It was true is the best song he's written in 20 some years, a classic. Gunslinger is a metaphor for our troubled nation, Creedence Song is a fun novelty song about the legend of CCR. The rest of the album is a joke. Poorly written songs on the same guitar licks he used on Blue Moon Swamp and stuff from Cream and Sun Records influences of his. You would have thought the rest of the album was covers if you didn't know any better. Cliche after Cliche. For example, on Somebody Help Me( I been searchin' all around the world lookin' for my baby) How many times has that been said? About a billion. On Longshot he rhymes Nurse with worse but says it like "Woiyse" or somethig. Talk about awful.
I was really excited when I heard this was coming out. Fogerty is too talented to put out stuff like this.
