Album Review

Advance buzz over the third album by Australian trio the Beautiful Girls was that the once primarily acoustic trio was plugging in and turning up in an attempt to move away from the "mellow jam band" tag and consistent Ben Harper and Jack Johnson comparisons they were getting. Well, Ziggurats is indeed a bit noisier; opening track "Royalty" even features a ton of distorted power chords. But at heart, the songs on Ziggurats are pretty much entirely the same as they would have been if they had appeared on earlier Beautiful Girls albums. The same cod-reggae beat underpins songs like "Sir, Your Fashion Has the Cold Heart of a Killer" (though, to be fair, points for the song title) and "Bring Me Your Cup," and singer/songwriter Mat McHugh (who with the addition of new drummer Bruce Braybrooke is now the band's sole original member) still sings like he's imitating Sting imitating Bob Marley. Anyone still looking for Police albums with all the interesting or quirky bits sanded away in favor of nothing but a certain brand of easy listening skank will be all over Ziggurats. Those with an allergy to Trustafarians, hacky sacks, and patchouli oil are advised to stay well away. [The CD was also released with bonus tracks.]

utterly, utterly disappointing

i am very saddened and disappointed by this change they have made to their sound. everything they have made before this is just plain GOLDEN. if this is the only TBG you know, PLEASE, do yourself a favor and check out the older stuff, like Learn Yourself, We're Already Gone, Water, and Weight Of The World. (all of which can be found on Amazon)

this is just watered down, common pop. there isnt a single song on here that i like.

i just hope Mishka doesnt change his style like on his new album

different

It may be a totally drastic difference from their older albums, but i really dig this album.
This band is capable of alot.

If you don't like this album you're not a Beautiful Girls fan

An amazing sound brought forth by a fantastic band. I know a lot of people are saying they don't like it just because it sounds a little different from the earlier stuff. Get over yourself! It's their band. They choose what to play. Not you. All their CDs are a little different from each other. It happens. And, luckily for you, they're all good (despite what you say). And to everyone who gave this CD a good rating, you rock... and coincidentally have good taste in music. 5 stars for Ziggurats.
