Album Review

If Rich Machin and Ian Glover were aiming for a dark, moody vibe on their debut album as Soulsavers, 2003's Tough Guys Don't Dance, they hit the jackpot when they persuaded Mark Lanegan to lend his vocal talents to their second full-length project, It's Not How Far You Fall, It's the Way You Land. While the downbeat atmosphere of Soulsavers' languid drum loops, spare keyboard patterns, and ghostly string samples certainly set the stage for their celebration of the dark night of the soul, Lanegan's vocals steal the show and run with it on the opening track, "Revival," and if anything he pulls the songs into even deeper and more forbidding territory as the album goes along. The quiet desperation of Lanegan's performance on "Spiritual," the ragged menace of "Ghosts of You and Me" and the blasted, forlorn resignation of "No Expectations" rank with his finest recorded work to date, and as strong as the musical backdrops are on this set, it's all but impossible to imagine these songs being nearly as effective with anyone else as lead singer. It's also worth noting that the most effective songs on this album happen to be covers, suggesting that while Soulsavers have no small talent as producers and arrangers, they have a ways to go in terms of writing material. But if Lanegan takes the spotlight away from Machin and Glover on It's Not How Far You Fall, It's the Way You Land, they unquestionably gave him a remarkable vehicle for his vocal skills, and it would certainly be to the advantage of both sides for Soulsavers and Lanegan to collaborate again some day.

PAINFUL!!! Don't buy the whole album!!

I heard "Revival" on the radio a number of times and absolutely loved it so much, I bought the whole album, without listening to the tracks or reading all the reviews. I thought that with such an amazing song, the whole album must be pretty good at a minimum. As fantastic as "Revival" is, the rest of this album is only slightly better than listening to someone run their fingernails down a blackboard. Imagine an entire band dying in bed, realizing that they've had no life, they're absolutely miserable, and they want Jesus to save them. That's what this album is. "No Expectations" is the second best song and even that one is also just dreadfully slow and painful. This album contains songs with slowly sung lyrics such as, "Jesus, Jesus, I have no one but you..."

If this was Christian music, at least it would be forgiveable in some way. but ugh, I can't describe how horrible this album is to listen to (with the exception of the brilliant "Revival"). If you enjoy slitting your wrists to music, or music that sounds as though it's being performed by people who are slitting their wrists, or if you like music that will make you want to slit your wrists, then enjoy! For everybody else, download Revival and run away!!!

Actually more like bubalicious

I dig what this last guy said but I really do think that they're letting the feeling of the music strike deep enough. I bought this album based on a review I read in SF Weekly and I can't stress enough how haunting it is. Its a piercing sound that invades the body, the words creep in and linger in the front of your brain and are then washed away by the hypnotic, but not redundant, guitar. I think the album was created to affect you while you listen and its an easy one to listen to front and back. Total late night end of the world beauty here.

Spirit and grit.

A natural collaborative fit from the King of the cooperative effort. Mark Lanegan may not have had a solo project in a while, or any intentions to do so, but if this is the kind of work one can expect from his joint efforts, I will more than gladly accept his musical co-dependency. One of the reasons this album works so well is the vast input Lanegan had in the songs, co-writing several and a reworking of Lanegan's Kingdoms of Rain. The effect is a cohesive, natural sound, and Lanegan’s sweetly rasping chords fall innately into place with the industrial gospel layers Soulsavers create. The songs are perhaps slightly overworked at times, particularly in Neil Young’s Through My Sails, however the efforts of the cover are redeemed in The Stones’ No Expecations. All in all a brilliant piece of work.
