Album Review

Ohmega Watts, the Seattle-by-way-of-Florida-by-way-of-Queens producer/MC, shows off his formidable skills on his second full-length, Watts Happening, an album as equally concerned, if not more so, with his beat-making as it is with his rhymes. As it stands, this isn't a bad move, as Watts, though able and sure behind the mic, is much more interesting behind the boards and synths. While his words traverse the typical backpacker fare — societal and political problems, relationships, his love of hip-hop — the tracks he lays down show off a much more complex artist with a diverse array of influences. Besides the straightforward MPC-plus-sample-oriented (but well done) numbers like "What It's Worth," "Eyes & Ears," and "Triple Double," Watts explores bossa nova ("Adaptico" and "Saywhayusay"), neo-soul ("Work for Wealth"), and variations of funk ("Freak Out," "Are You Satisfied," and "The Platypus Strut"), and does a good job with each of them, displaying his own, more modern take on things (his heavy use of synths, for example) within the malleable confines of the others he clearly loves. And he has a brightness, a warmth to his music that manages to be attractive and compelling without being cheesy or trite. Even his lyrics, while they sometimes slip into the cliché (like in the unfortunate but well-intentioned closer, "Gone with the Wind"), are able to express his feelings and ideas in a relatable but not-always-predictable way. "Found," for example, the requisite born-again track (although Watts, a Christian, avoided most conspicuously religious statements in his debut, The Find, he addresses his beliefs more frankly here) doesn't try to preach or convert but rather describe and explain his transition, and "Model Citizen" ("What if you could just be a kid again and waste the day/Never worry about life or tooth decay," he rhymes) discusses the state of radio, the music industry, and the life of a contemporary child without complaining angrily or bitterly. Because Ohmega Watts isn't an angry or bitter man, and this is evident in his music, it makes Watts Happening just as intelligent, well-crafted, and interesting as its creator. [The album also comes with a bonus disc, comprised solely of the instrumental versions of his songs, a must-have for fans of Watts' production.]

This is great stuff. this is better than most of the hip hop you're likely to hear in a given day, and it's impeccably consistent all the way through, as being a super solid exemplary rap album, while at the same time being outstandingly well-rounded and diverse. It's obvious that this guy has very broad musical tastes from the samples and stylings, too.
BUT at times I've come to dislike what I feel he did very successfully on "the Find": which is his all-to effusive use of the sing-song-y choruses with the girls or children singing alongside him. It's alright sometimes, but so many of the songs broke into these cute little rhyme schemes so often on the album that it began to sound a novelty and even borderlined gimmicky. the raps in between were good and the beats were incredibly strong, but I simply cannot shake those sing-song chorus breaks from my head. I guess it does set his style apart from many others, but I must say that I was a lot more fond of "The Find" upon first hearing it.
Start with the Find, and if you're into it, (which you should be if you like hip hop at all) get this. itunes doesn't offer the bonus beats disc for some reason, but I'm sure they will soon cuz I know they'd love to rip you off for it to some degree. But yes, I'd like to reiterate how good the beat making is, the 2nd disc is just as listenable and jus real tight all over.
I love "the platypus strut"

Great from start to finish

Album amazing.

Reminds me of Mos Def back in the day with a little less funk.

I'd say go cop the album, if you have not because you are missing out on a flow that is out of this world!

Let's see, i jumped out of my skin when i heard both "The Find" and this one. This is pure uncut adrenaline packed music, that shows no profanity necessary or bling or sexual episodes to rock the house. Listening to this album made me humble as a musician as my hobby is collecting great music. Humble meaning, i have a great appreciation for an artist who understands the foundation of music. Ohmega is just that. I have listened to both albums and every song is as fresh as the last. His collaborations with other MC's are unparallelled. No such thing as filler songs on these albums. Here's the thing, both albums are classics and could stand up with any MC, past or present, west or east coast or any foreign land. Reason being? No compromising the talent with gimmicks. I'll tell you this, if he came out during the era of Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Epmd, Public Enemy, NWA or Snoop Doggy Dog, Ohmega would be standing next to them and I am a big Rakim fan. Biggie Smalls (if was alive), Jay-Z and Nas if they don't know who Ohmega was, they would all be astonished after one listen. Ohmega doesn't have a category as he understands what music is, because he pays homage to it. Buy this album and his 1st release "The Find" your ears will appreciate it. Enough said...
