Album Review

A Dream Too Late signed with Tooth and Nail with the help of their association with members of Falling Up, even touring together at one point. The trio from Albany, OR, does its best to imitate its pals' bright indie rock with plenty of synth and conscious hooks. It works well to a point. The weaknesses of the album — vague lyrics and indistinct riffs — are more indicative of the limitations of the genre than they are of the band. Few groups are able to turn power pop/emo into something truly unique, and although Intermission to the Moon showcases some impressive songwriting, it still falls short of the genre-defining standards like Mae's The Everglow and Anberlin's Cities.

Oregon's ADTL debut brings great mellow synth rock to Tooth and Nail.

From the state of Oregon, where past rock groups were first born (Falling Up & The Send), comes A Dream too Late. This album is starts off with  mellow synth track “14th & Knott” which talks about the roads in life we take. Another song that stands out is “Intermission to the Moon”, that says that we have one life on this Earth, so we should live it to the fullest. “Trendsetter”, points a clear picture of the popular kid in high school and how that life gets you nowhere. One of the more spiritual songs of the album is “The Life”, which is about someone giving God his life so he can change from the inside out. Break-ups and honesty in relationships are brung up in “City Park” and “Can I Be Honest?”, and are followed by the second spiritually-based song “Can I Start A New”.

In the end, this was a pretty solid debut album and a pleasure to listen to. With a mellow mood and synthesizers here and there, A Dream Too Late is a great band with a bright future.

A Good Start

Let me start off by saying, I now love this album. However, it didn't start that way. On first listen to the album, it sounded pretty good, but pretty generic. There was nothing immediately outstanding about the album, so I almost decided to kind of file it away. However, after watching the music video for "Intermission to the Moon," I suddenly noticed a synth riff during the chorus that I hadn't heard before. Then, after playing the song again and actually listening to the synth riff, it occured to me that if the mixing job had been done a little differently (so that the synth riff stood out more), this would have been one of my absolute favorite songs.

After making this discovery, I then proceeded to give the ablum another chance and suddenly noticed the artistic influence in most of the songs. I really like the way they incorporate the synth into most of these songs and my only real complaint is that there are times (such as in "Intermission to the Moon") when the mixing of the song doesn't do it justice. The artistry in this album is much more subtle than say mewithoutYou's "Brother, Sister", but it's definately there. You just have to listen for it. Hopefully they don't ditch the synth sound, but rather improve it. It would also be awesome if they would start improving the song structures (verse-chorus-verse-chorus can get old in any band).
Overall though, I really enjoy this album and look forward to hearing more from A Dream Too Late in the future.
