Album Review

How do you write music to accompany a genocide? In a sense, this is the challenge faced by composer Graeme Revell with Darfur Now, a documentary about the humanitarian crisis in the Sudan. Revell, whose previous scores include The Crow and Sin City, certainly knows how to provide music for violent movies, even if those were fictional ones. But his real task here, most of the time, anyway, is to underlie the activities of six different people investigating or being affected by the crisis. Still, a sense of foreboding is a necessary part of the music's tone. Revell mixes ethnic instruments (usually in the foreground) with traditional orchestral music provided by the Slovak National Symphony Orchestra (usually in the background), to achieve a hybrid effect. Often reed instruments play plaintive melodies over tribal drums. Certain cues — "Rebels Patrolling" and "Pablo Passes Gunmen" — require dramatic music to reflect the threatening nature of what's on the screen. In the latter parts of the soundtrack, the music becomes more varied, with an Indian flavor entering in "Meeting" and an uplifting pop theme appearing as "Adam's Victory" (repeated as "Don Talks to Young People"). "Don's Children" is a solo piano passage, and the closing "Children of the World" is played on an acoustic guitar with symphonic backing. Revell has managed to follow the six main characters on their various journeys in Darfur and in the corridors of power where the crisis is debated, bringing different cultures together through the film's music.

striking a balance . . . with the use of an ellipse

just trying to put a few more stars up for the man that is Revell. if you are at all familiar with the haunting, engrossing, and stupifying work created by this individual then my work is down merely by raising the star score. that being said if you are new. enjoy. and i recommend dune and thr crow as well. i might be a bit of a freak for orchestral work but i have used this music as the most fercious lullaby more than once. it will lull and startle you. ok. done. now.

More solid Revell

I usually dig Revell's material. I was awestruck by the entire musical composition of Wim Wenders' 1991 film, Until the End of the World. Revell's score intertwined with tracks by Peter Gabriel, U2, T-Bone Burnett, CAN and more... Well, Winders and Revell had me at hello. Literally, with the first shot of the earth, with Revell's beautiful tonality filling all that space.

Darfur Now follows suit. Solid, engaging, holistic, moving. Epic. But still, haunting, foreboding.

Definitely worth checking out. I haven't seen the film yet -- but definitely plan to as soon as I can.

And a note to reviewers: please avoid one-starring an album if you don't even know what it is you're reviewing. It's simply disrespectful and misleading to others shopping for music -- to those searching for new sounds.

Guys, don't you know what's actually happening in Darfur?

The villagers in Darfur are victums of Genocide. If you have no idea what that means, it means that you are trying to get rid of a certain group. It's like what happened with the Holocaust. This is beautiful music and it totally works with the motion picture. I highly suggest you buy it.
