Things to be aware of when buying this soundtrack...
by Bluebear121. The music is subdued. There's a good reason for this. This movie is not a romantic, or a comedy, or a musical. It's a drama. Not only that, it's a drama set in the middle of WWII. Yes, you will get a few wry laughs throughout of the movie, but there's no point in the soundtrack to be light and jovial when the tone of the film isn't.
2. Certain parts of the music will repeat themselves. This, children, is called a motif. Now, what's a motif, you might ask? A motif is a symbol mentioned throughout a movie or a novel to reiterate a point. The music in this case, is being used as a motif. So yes, you'll hear a lot of themes over and over. These themes are supposed to bring you back in previous points in the film.
3. Now, this actually has nothing to do with the actual soundtrack. For those of you who call it a rip-off of other movie scores, can I ask you a question? Do you compose movie scores? No? Then why are you criticizing Dario Marianelli's work? Believe it or not, there are only so many tunes in the world, and some of them will get re-borrowed. And it's not like Mr. Marianelli is deliberately taking every single page of the score from other movies and calling it his own. They sound the same. Doesn't mean they are the same.
I thoroughly enjoy this soundtrack. I still listen to it every day. My favorites are Briony, The Half Killed, Elegy for Dunkirk, Denouement, The Cottage On the Beach, Atonement and Jean-Yves Thibaudet's take on Clair de Lune. It is a good soundtrack to wind down, and I find it to be an even better soundtrack to write to. In fact, I'm listening to it right now.
So, I hope this was helpful and that you buy this soundtrack if you haven't listened to it already.
