Album Review

It's been almost three years since John Roderick and his Long Winters dropped the critically acclaimed When I Pretend to Fall. Since then, keyboardist/vocalist Sean Nelson and drummer Michael Shilling have departed, leaving only bassist Eric Corson and bandleader John Roderick to tend to the fire. If their new EP, a quietly explosive collage of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot-meets-the Flaming Lips bombast, is any indication of where Roderick is taking the project, fans will have much to rejoice about. Built around the elegiac opener "The Commander Thinks Aloud" — save two unnecessary live tracks — Ultimatum is a rare EP that sounds almost important enough to be considered essential within the artist's canon. While it may eventually serve as a bridge to subsequent recordings, on first listen it sounds like a rebirth. Roderick's emotive vocals are in full effect, soaring fearlessly over drum loops, orchestral samples, and serpentine guitar lines — it's not as shocking as that sounds, but it is noticeably more progressive than the sweet Americana pop attack heard on previous recordings — resulting in one the year's biggest teasers. Let's hope that what follows is as passionate as it is complex.

Genius

John Roderick is something of a genius of melody and mood, with (I'm told) some of the petulance one associates with that epithet. Listen to "Delicate Hands," to take but one example of many over the course of four records, and hear for yourself. With Mark Kozelek he's the one of the only contemporary songwriters I can think of whose every song rewards close listening.

Thinking aloud

I've been an emotional wreck for the last few days because of "The Commander Thinks Aloud". The shuttles Challenger and Columbia disasters both effected me deeply. The fact that I grew 17 years between the two makes this song all the more powerful to me. This song, sung from a first person POV, literally puts you into the mind of an astronaut during the last few seconds of his/her life. I got turned onto this song from browsing through Rainn Wilson's playlist and I have to agree with him - the song is somehow uplifting even though the subject matter is incredibly somber. I have no idea how The Long Winters pulled that off - but I know that it's art with a capital A.R.T.

Worth it!

My first exposure to The Long Winters was the stunning version of The Commander Thinks Aloud that was on The Future Soundtrack For America. It's a brilliant and captivating song that took my breath away with it's disarming cockpit-view inner-dialog before and during a shuttle disaster. Although the remix on Future Soundtrack packs more emotional punch, I very much love this more organic version. There are two versions of Ultimatum on this EP, but please don't let that disuade you. The studio version is a much needed rework of the ill-conceived version on the full length album. It's beautiful, evoking autumnal imagry, much like the album art suggests. The live version is an even more emazing and emotionally present version which is now my absolute favorite. Go ahead and spend the money on this EP. You won't miss the money and you'll really enjoy the music!
