iTunes Review

Fat Joe really is the elephant in the room. He’s survived 15 years in an industry in which most can’t survive 15 months, yet for all his shrewdness and hard work, he struggles to be noticed and is perpetually shortchanged in both sales and respect. Part of this has to do with his shapeshifting; while latching onto currents trends has enabled him to endure for this long, it’s also made it hard for fans to discern the real Fat Joe. Though he's aligned with Southern superstars like DJ Khaled and Lil’ Wayne, Joe is a Bronx-bred homeboy, weaned under the advanced techniques of the DITC crew and his new album's best moments feel more like New York City sidewalks than Miami sunshine. The chunky, blistered grooves of “That White” and “The Crackhouse” display old school toughness, as if the cuts were fashioned the historic way — from a DJ’s two turntables. Though Joe might never sort out his identity crisis, there is still enough Bronx blood in this behemoth’s veins to deliver something lean and mean.
