Some Side Projects are Good for You

by jean-keir

The same echo-bass guitar that fueled Honey White's "Lightning Rod" now also powers an album's worth of instrumental, ambient post-rock, but you don't need to know the story to enjoy the moody tunes. A soundtrack to a novel of the same name, the "Weapon of Young Gods" CD burbles its way through enough background music to ensure it won't rise above the status of low-profile, holding-pattern release. Even so, the lack of chart-busting material is never overwhelmed by Honey White bassist Keir DuBois' egomanical lack of humility, especially since the disc gets crucial help from Honey White skinsman Bill Fedderson and HW guitarist/abstract sonic genius Brian Wolff. Some points of reference include Lanois/Eno, Tortoise, the Mermen, Explosions in the Sky, Neil Young's "Dead Man" soundtrack, and Nathan Johnson's "Brick" soundtrack.
