Hard

IMO this is the hardest Dieselboy album there is, and the best one. At first I couldn't listen to it for a long time just because it was almost too much. Now I can--maybe I've developed a tolerance for Substance D. :-)

Absolutely horrendous

One fine day, in Rochester, New York, I was pleasantly flipping through Borders' lack of selection of Electronic and Dance music. There was hardly a dnb album in the selection. When there was, I either already had it, or hadn't heard of it. Then, I found Substance D. I had heard of Dieselboy prior to this on one of my Pandora escapades; I believe it was the Human Resource album. I remembered it being okay. On the cover, I saw some stickers that said some b******t: "Best American dnb album to date!" and "Deiselboy: best drum and bass dj ever!;" something along those lines. So I thought "Hey, I love drum and bass. I kinda like Dieselboy, even though I have heard very little. And apparently, he is the best dnb dj ever." I got home and put the cd in my computer only to find the depressing conclusion that I am a consumer w***e and should never read a label again in my life. I couldn't figure out what went wrong. Was this really drum and bass? The answer is no. Now I don't mean to tarnish Dieselboy's name. I've been a wee afraid him since I bought this. But jesus christ, this is just absolutely tasteless. Throughout most of the album, it just feels like there is something missing. There is no feeling. It seems engineered for hype and only hype. Everything is over-distorted, and everything is over-repetitive. This is NOT dnb. This is tarnishing the genre of drum and bass, and this is tarnishing the genre of electronic. You call this dance? Are you supposed to dance to this? B******t. The only way you could dance to this is if snort twenty lines of coke and take a few hits of acid; you won't be dancing for very long. I would like to congratulate them on the awesome introduction. But other than that, there is nothing here worth a damn cent. Sometimes, I tell jokes, to the only person in the room: myself, about how drum and bass is the "metal" or "punk" of electronic music. I have found another parallel that is more of truth and less of laughter: this IS the metal of the electronic genre. And that was not a compliment. This is NOT ingenious. This is NOT intelligent. This IS noise. Bad metal is repetitive; bad metal is over-distorted, bad metal is heavily lacking feeling. This album is most indefinitely the perfect parallel to bad metal. After reading the reviews praising this album, it looks to me like the nut-jobs who like this noise seem to like the fact that Dieselboy has made a hard drum and bass album for the sake of making hard drum and bass album. Noise for the sake of making noise. And yes, I WILL go and listen to Hospital records, thank you very much. This album shows me that America does not know drum and bass. Someone, please, point to me a good American drum and bass album. Show me that this horrible album does not represent this country. I would like to think that it does not, but I can not be certain. Overall: this album is not worth a damn penny.
