iTunes Review

Rejuvenated and on top of her game, Mariah Carey follows up 2005’s hugely successful The Emancipation of Mimi with 2008’s E=MC2, an album very similar in sound and content. Mariah’s comeback has taken her deep into contemporary urban and hip-hop territory with few backwards glances. Those hankering after gospel-centric ballads will only have the stirring “I Wish You Well” to satisfy them. Instead, there’s a bevy of ultra-smooth midtempo tracks here, with the teasing “I’m That Chick,” the playfully erotic “Touch My Body,” and the sweetly swinging “O.O.C.” among the standouts. Carey downplays multi-octave vocal fireworks in favor of cooed phrases and rapid-fire word slinging, an approach that fits the restless vibe of tunes like “Migrate” (a club-hopping duet with rapper T-Pain) particularly well. She decks herself out in Jamaican trappings in “Cruise Control” and invokes the lush elegance of disco in “I’ll Be Lovin’ U Long Time.” A flash of anger lights up “Side Effects,” a track rehashing Carey’s long-ago split with husband Tommy Mottola. For the most part, though, the album is warm-hearted and forgiving. Formula? If yes, a winning one.

Mariah Canon needs to retire

Honestly, the only people who would listen to this and find it remotely likeable are airheaded little teenage girls with no taste in music whatsoever. I swear, I can't fathom what has happened to the once-great Mariah Carey to devolve her into this trashy, repulsive wannabe-gangsta-rapper streak. This is the last place I could've ever pictured Mariah to wind up in her career, but alas, the greatness of her is now a thing of the past and we'll probably see no more of it. She needs to either get away from Nick Canon and his influence over her, or simply throw in the towel and not tarnish her reputation any further than she already has, content with the legacy of seven great albums she did manage to create in her career (none of them having come out after 2000).
R.I.P. the real Mariah (1990-1999)

Worse than 'Emancipation' and on the same level of substandardness as 'Charmbracelet'

1 Migrate 4/5- A solid album opener. While it's lyrics are lacking, the beat is solid, and the whole feel of the song is fun
2 Touch my body- 3/5- Lyrically absent, but it's not terrible. I know Mariah can do better than this
3 Cruise Control- 2.5/5- Really unnecessary and awkward song. Not atrocious, but I won't be visiting this song too often.
4 I Stay in love- 3/5- A sappy, but nice love song. There's nothing wrong with the song, it's just that it could have been better.
5 Side Effects- 2/5- This song is a throwaway. I don't like the MTV-style of the song. Unimpressive and substandard.
6 I'm That Chick- 2/5- Lyrically dead and uninspiried. I'm so far, not too enthralled in this album.
7 Love Story- 2/5- Even 'I Stay in Love' was better. Not a good song and an insufficient one at that.
8 I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time- 3/5- Not as bad as the others, but not too awe-inspiring. A sufficient effort, but a lacking one.
9 Last Kiss- 2.5/5- Not bad, but not good either. The album is as disappointing as Charmbracelet.
10 Thanx 4 Nothin'- 3/5- This beat worked better in the recent 'H.A.T.E.U.', but I still like the song. Not too shabby.
11 O.O.C.- 3/5- This is where the album lets up a little. A pretty decent song, but nothing to write home about.
12 For the Record- 2/5- Not a big fan of this song. Another dud
13 Bye Bye- 4/5- A very solid song and at least it's better 'I Stay in Love'. A sufficient and worthy song.
14 I Wish You Well- 2.5/5- A disappointing closure, but not terrible.

Overall, I found E=MC2 to be tried, uninspiring, and a dud. Even Emancipation was better than this, which is saying something. Mariah come back to your roots.
