iTunes Review

With tunes such as “You Can Do Better Than Me,” “Pity and Fear,” and “The Ice is Getting Thinner,” it’s safe to say no one will accuse Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard of getting too comfortable with his band’s continued popular success. The Death Cab cult grows with each release and 2008’s Narrow Stairs should expand their base even further, since it manages to both remain true to the band’s slumbering speeds and heartfelt manifestos while also focusing their sound into a tight, active unit. Backed with electric piano and Gibbard’s earnest vocals, “Grapevine Fires” paints a creepy romantic portrait of a man, his lover and her daughter in a cemetery observing a distant brushfire. “I Will Possess Your Heart” begins with a long, lurking intro before giving way to an obsessive admirer’s verbal promise to win the affection of his obsession. “Your New Twin Sized Bed” lopes with an irresistible melody. Whether the moments are dark or walking towards the light, Gibbard and his indelible tunes evoke a sweetness not often heard in modern pop music.

Wow.

Got tuned into DCFC about a year ago. I can't figure out why people are saying they hate this album. This one finally has some upbeat, almost rock-like songs. Sure that isn't the old Death Cab, but some thing change. And it changed fir the better. The breathlessness of Bixby Canyon Bridge still gets me.

First Impressions

When I first purchased this album, i had major mixed feelings about it. I was wanting the familar sounds of Plans to come out of my stereos speakers. I missed the more upbeat rhythms of Plans and Trans. I bought this listened to it for a few days and put it away for a Long time. It took 4 months for me to fall in [Love] with this album. Yes its a totally different sound for DCFC, super mellow and just way chill music, but now i'm obsessed with it like all there other albums. Each album has a different feel to it, as they should. Bands need vocal variety and they need to take risks for growth. Ben Gibbard is so Lyrically Talented, it boggles my mind how anyone comes up with this stuff. "The wind picked up and the fire spread, the grapevine scene was left for dead" - Grapevines.
His Lyrics are constantly AMAZING me. He is SO talented, as is all of DCFC. Everytime i listen to Cath i keep thinking i'm going to hear A Hand me Down Wedding [Gown] that's what you would think right? But he just catches you by suprise and says "Dress". Stuff like that keeps me listening. SO Unique. My Favs from this album are: Cath..., Grapevine Fires, and I Will Possess Your Heart - The intro to that song drove me insane, how long it is, but its so well done, the beats are amazing and i've learned to [Love it!].

If your not sure about this album, just KEEP listening. That's just how DCFC always been for me. Just keep listening and it will grow on you. For me anyway.

I just wasted $13.00 on this album. I gave it 2 stars because they can play instruments. That's it. I didn't like it.
