Album Review
Donna Summer sounds younger here than on her previous studio album, 1991's Mistaken Identity, or just about any of the isolated tracks that surfaced throughout the previous 17 years, which is a good thing as frequently as it is a bad thing. Crayons benefits from Summer's effortless energy; she was clearly into making this album, and her voice is as able and flexible as ever. However, almost all of the material with which she has to work — several stylistic angles are taken with the likes of Danielle Brisebois (Natasha Bedingfield, Kelly Clarkson) Greg Kurstin (Lily Allen, Nelly Furtado), J.R. Rotem (Leona Lewis, Trey Songz), and several others — would make more sense on an album by a female teen pop group from the U.K. or, in some cases, a young adult catering to the coffeehouse market. One exception, if only from a lyrical standpoint, is "The Queen Is Back," where Summer refers to herself in the third person, as well as her past: "So many years ago on the radio/She crept into your soul and learned to love you." But it's really the type of move you'd expect from an aspiring diva on her second or third album. In-fashion vocal effects, which Summer certainly does not need, detract from a handful of these tracks, but as a whole, the album won't have trouble pleasing fans who just want to hear their queen have a blast and tear it up.

Fantastic!!!
by XmannycWhat an amazing album! I can't stop listening to it! Donna sounds just as good here as she did 30 yeras ago. Why aren't they releasing more single? Every song is worthy of being a hit!!!
So glad you chose to put out an album of NEW material rather than a standards album like most artists from that era!
Just a couple of comments
by indycoteFirst...to the iTunes reviewer:
The lyric to "The Queen is Back" is not "...and learned to love you..." it's "and loved to love you..." fits better with "on the radio and loved to love you oh oh ohohoh", don't ya think? sheesh!
Second...just in general:
This is by far one of her best albums ever. Why it wasn't more of a hit, I'll never understand. I loved Mistaken Identity for the sheer fact that it proved she could take on a current style and run with it. Crayons is the same deal. I sincerely believe it is among her best. I just hate that more people didn't get the point. I am happy though, that in general, the album is well-received among listeners that give it a chance. The only advice I can give without making a super long review is listen to this album as loudly as you can without distorting and/or getting in trouble. The production is top notch and the more you listen (or if you can play it at a proper volume) the more you will appreciate her efforts. She could've done a standards album, but she decided to go against the norm and make the music she wanted. I will agree with the iTunes reviewer on one point...she sounds as young as ever...even at 60.
MOST UNDER-RATED ALBUM OF THE PAST 2 YEARSI A must HAVE!!
by RobJEvansThis is not DISCO! The "world" vibe is execellent. I downloaded this before a trip to Maui not even hearing a track. I figured how bad could it be? Its still on my Shuffle and I love it!!! Every song reminds me of a definative hour I was on the island.
I dont know why this amazing album was not promoted as well as it should have been. Donna could have toured with this album alone.
Crayons with Ziggy Marley could have easily been a top 10 single. And Im a Fire should be a dance club classic...I hope she continues putting out such great electic albums..A must HAVE!!
