iTunes Review

This garage-folk duo from Seattle understands that when simple musical elements are balanced with good taste and clever arrangements, something uniquely huge and wonderful-sounding can happen. She's The Dutchess, He's The Duke was recorded on old lo-fi gear with ‘60s electric-guitar tones, tambourines, acoustic strumming, handclaps, woodwinds, airtight vocal harmonies and classic song crafting. Check the singing on "Reservoir Park" and you can imagine what it might have sounded like if one of the Davies brothers from the Kinks was a sister instead. There's a warm, campfire intimacy in "Ship Made of Stone" and the almost anachronistic "Back to Me" plays with a Velvet Underground coolness that nicely contrasts with endearingly bittersweet lyrics of unrequited love. The lyrical phrasings on "Mary" are Dylanesque, but Morrison's indie-pop harmonies save it from sounding too retro for its own good. With so many hip, hairy, indie acts out there trying to mimic bygone cult icons like Marc Bolan and Karen Dalton, it's refreshing to hear a band like this one bringing something new to an old table.

perfect for any occasion. this is the make-out, break-up, late-night, wake-up, road-trip, garage-sale soundtrack you've always wished was on your turntable. these folks are the real deal... super fun live too, so see 'em when they come to your town. be sure to ask "where's donnie?".

This album is awesome. I love it so much. If I were talented enough to make music, I'd want to make music just like this.

I'm going to see a show of theirs in two weeks, and my friends and I are driving 90 miles, so the gas will end up costing more than the tickets do. But as soon as I told my friends that they were playing, there was no hesitation. We're all very excited.

The one problem with this album is that it's short. A little more than a half an hour makes me feel like it ends right after it begins. I understand though, studio time is expensive, along with every other aspect of making a record. Here's hoping another album will come out soon.

While Jesse Lortz and Kimberly Morrison have both done time in some of Seattle's most rough and tumble garage punk combos, the two found themselves receiving international acclaim in 2008 for their debut album as the Dutchess & the Duke, in which they turned their attentions to acoustic guitars and...
