dynamic and lush, as only elfman can

by smile twice

i don't think i'm the first to point out that this score was a very difficult listen at first... seeming like a collection of noise and contemporary-elfman brooding textures that were cobbled together with no overall design in sight..... well that has changed!! while i still hold to the belief that it was a mistake not to have a main theme for the film (this should not have come as a surprise since elfman has seemingly avoided this way of working for some time now), the score is overflowing with countless motifs and themes for almost every element in the film. so much so, that you don't even realize it until you've become very familiar with the work. it's also worth noting just how many flavors elfman throws into the overall mix..... from dynamic, and multi-layered action scoring..... to jazzy hipster interludes...... gothic fantasy..... bernard herrmann era monster music...... to full-blown classic film dramatic scoring. there's ever some nods to old-school elfman thrown in there for good measure. track 9- 'father and son' probably does the best at displaying the score's multi dimensions. track 18- 'a choice' is probably the other big highlight (although almost all of the album is terrific), containing maybe the most intense dramatic passages and is the best example of the score's sinister side. just listen from the 2 minute mark to the 2:45 minute mark..... and tell me elfman isn't channeling something truly surreal and dark like nothing else...

I love the Hellboy movies both of them 1& 2 so far! I hope there is at least one more! Am I the only person who would love to see if not all some of the songs that you hear in most movies? I mean I love the music of Danny Elfman don't get me wrong! But I would love to hear these other songs sang by these other groups that don't usually show up on most soundtracks but are in the movie! Again I ask am I the only one that wants this? I bet I'm not!
Some movies are at least clever enough to have another album after the first one comes out and it usually adds the extra songs! I mean I like listening to just music soundtracks too, but the ones with the songs that are sung in the movie would be great! I bet that some of these groups are indie groups that you will never hear again but are good when you hear them in these movies!
