iTunes Review
Impossibly exuberant, occasionally loopy, and as relentlesslly infectious as its iconic source material, the screen adaptation of the hit stage show based on Abba’s world-beating pop music catalog doesn’t so much walk the fine line between tribute to the screen musical and outright parody as gleefully blur it unto oblivion. At an age when stuffy AFI tributes would seem her lot in life, Oscar winner Meryl Streep adds yet another subchapter to her already burgeoning resume: pop diva. Whether delivering the title track and “Dancing Queen” with the muscular self-assurance of Merman or lending a weary, Sondheim-esque pathos to “Winner Takes It All,” the veteran offers a winning surprise at virtually every turn. Christine Baranski’s spotlight “Does Your Mother Know” offers a similar revelation, while young newcomer Amanda Seyfried’s quavering soprano is the perfect foil to Streep’s often gutsy vocals, taking two fine showcase turns on the iTunes-only closing tracks, “I Have a Dream” and “Thank You For the Music.” Abba mainstays/executive producers Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus insure that the musical backdrops never stray far from their own epochal productions, even if their pulse seems skillfully quickened throughout to good effect.

Again, I'm gonna have to take both sides...
by talented814I do agree that, although it's not perfect (*cough*Pierce Brosnan*cough*), I think that this album is worth a few listens. Amanda Seyfried has a very good voice. It's not necessarily strong in any way, shape or form, but it's pleasant, which is all that the role calls for anyway. I have mixed reviews about Meryl Streep. I agree that this is a surprise that she is in a singing role because she is not a singer and she never was before this and she probably never will after this, but I think with all that put into play, I think she does a great job. You can hear in some songs (particularly Money, Money, Money) that she tries to make it more acting and less singing because she knows that she isn't a great singer, but you can hear that she's having fun with it (particularly because these are songs from her childhood, so it must bring back memories). However, I think that her voice is not strong enough or high enough to take on this role. The Winner Takes It All is just bad. It's one of my favorite songs, but it's really bad. I don't think this album is awful, but I think different casting would've been smarter (why couldn't Johnny Depp have been in this movie?)
If you liked the movie...
by peppersmom001If you liked the movie you will like this album. Amanda Seyfried has a sweet and strong voice, Meryl Streep is amazing, Christine Baranski is an all-time favorite and Colin Firth adds a bittersweet poignancy to "Our Last Summer". Pierce Brosnan should keep his day job, but I found his attempts endearing. Of course, Dominic Cooper, Julie Walters, Stellan Skarsgard, Ashley Lilley & Rachel McDowall added to the spirit of the tunes. If you are looking for ABBA carbon copies, this is not the album for you. But if you want to re-live the fun spirit of the film, by all means try this. The movie cast adds a smile to their music, and it comes across.
